Okay I mis-understood. I thought you wanted to avoid update prompts. One way is to only manually check for updates.
However - give this a try. I haven't tested the method.
In about:config, search for app.update.silent and set the preference to true.

Its not a big problem, i misunderstand things some times as well. I just checked, and it was set to false, so i have set it to true, but im not sure how to verify if it actually works?
I guess i could try to test it, by installing an outdated version of an addon, and then test to see if firefox updates it automatically with this setting.
Anyway, i just did some testing to see if it works. I went to this website and installed an outdated version of ad block plus, and clicked on check for updates, to see if FF would update it. It did.
So, after that, i installed the same outdated version of ad block plus again, and went to about config and set app.update.silent to true. I then restarted firefox, to see if the addon would be updated automatically this time, but it didnt.
So you have to manually check for updates for your addons on a regular basis. It also seems like checking the option that says update addons automatically doesnt work, and the same thing goes for clicking the reset all addons to update automatically button.

Post #189: That's just supposed to silently update Firefox (program) without notification. The only noftification that you should get is when you have closed Firefox following a downloaded update - the next time you launch Firefox you get "firefox will start after installing updates" or similar. I don't remember the exact wording.
Program updates and addon updates are not the same thing. Also some updates will never complete without a relaunch
RE: Addons update.
Check that extensions.update.enabled is set to True in about:config.
and check that extensions.update.autoUpdateDefault is set to True
Use a background service to install updates app.update.service.enabled True
Use Addons Manager to check that each addon is set to update either default setting or on.
Click the "More" button for each addon.

Also check the last time an addon was updated by the developer. If not updated by the developer FF addons check will not result in any updates.
It seems like a lot of settings to enale, just to make sure that your addons are updating automatically. I have set them to true, so lets see if it works. I have also tried setting automatic updates to on instead of default. Im going to give it some time and get back with the results.
