    Im getting some different results while testing auto updates. I downloaded the old version of ad block plus, and set automatic updates to on, and ten i waited about a day before attemptingto update it.

    As a result, firefox said there was no updates available, so i guess it must have updated itself. I did the same thing earlier today and got a complete opposite result. So, what results did you guys get?

    Mr.Callender,
    What Mr.Bree has written happens as I have1709. No option still to make ff as default browser.
    I tried the following. But list does not include firefox.
    C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{17cd9488-1228-4b2f-88ce-4298e93e0966} -Microsoft.DefaultPrograms\pageDefaultProgram

    Yes @ivgandhi, sad to say that is now non-functional. You can make the same changes in Settings, but it's clumsy to use in comparison with the 'old ways'.

    Settings > Apps > Default apps
    (click on the current web browser to change it)

    Click on 'Set defaults by app' then click on Firefox.

    Now click on 'Manage'.

    You can make other changes in 'Choose default applications by file type' and in 'Choose default applications by protocol'. It covers everything you could do before, but is no longer in one convenient place as it was in Control Panel.

    Sorry I totally forgot about changes in 1709. Currently I use 1703. Is anyone willing to test to see if DefaultProgramsEditor works with 1709?

    Thanks for checking. You did run DefaultProgramsEditor via right click context menu > Run As Administrator?

    Try merging this reg file:
    Download, merge then sign out/ in or reboot.

    File contents:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    ; Set Default Program
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.shtml\UserChoice]
    "Progid"="FirefoxHTML-308046B0AF4A39CB"

    ; Set Default Program
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.xht\UserChoice]
    "Progid"="FirefoxHTML-308046B0AF4A39CB"

    ; Set Default Program
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.xhtml\UserChoice]
    "Progid"="FirefoxHTML-308046B0AF4A39CB"
    Question regarding your old Firefox profile. Did you back it up before your clean install? If not do you have system restore enabled? It might be possible to mount a restore point to extract your old profile.

    I downloaded and did merge after right clicking the file in explorer. Then rebooted. Still in settings default application for web browser shows as edge. Further list does not contain firefox. Further when I start firefox, it asks whether firefox should be made default. There also it takes to settings only.
    I depend upon firefox sync. I did not back up profile.

    If you have system restore points available you can mount one and browse to your old Firefox Profile folder.

    ShadowExplorer.com - Manual

    Browse the shadow copy and locate your old C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

    Copy the Profiles folder and profiles.ini file to a new folder on your desktop.

    Sorry but I don't use system restore personally and keep it disabled so cannot provide screenshots.

    If you manage to recover those items delete your existing Profiles folder and profiles.ini file and replace the recovered copies in the same location as the originals.
