You can add the following code to your UserChrome.css file to hide the button, (and hover on it for 2 seconds when you need it):
Nice tweak but I think that you are wasting your time as OP doesn't want to mess about with .css

    See bottom of this post.

I still haven't found a way to get rid of the page actions button.
Are these the buttons you're talking about?

Right click here to show or hide menu bar.
Or just use the Alt key, that temporarily brings up the menu bar for a one-time use if it's currently hidden. Works in other browsers too, such as IE.

If you want to set to "never check for updates" you can still initiate a manual check via "Help" > "About Firefox"
I don't want FF to never check for updates, i want FF to download and install the updates automatically without asking me.

I reckon you need to make sure that you are not in private browsing mode to be able to select the option without it being greyed out.
I'm not in private browsing mode but the option is still greyed out.

@Callender i will try out your addon and come back with the results.

Okay I mis-understood. I thought you wanted to avoid update prompts. One way is to only manually check for updates.

However - give this a try. I haven't tested the method.

In about:config, search for app.update.silent and set the preference to true.

Don't feel bad about misunderstanding, apparently it happens a lot when this question is asked
Your suggestion (even citing the same source) is the Chosen Solution in this thread.

Sorry... I think you don't understand what I'm asking? I don't want to turn off updates. I want to turn off notifications.

It was set to false, so i have set it to true. But im not sure how to verify if it actually works?

I guess i can try testing it by installing an outdated addon and then testing to see if FF updates it automatically with this tweak.

Did some testing to see if it works. I went to this website and installed an outdated version of ad block plus, and clicked on check for updates to see if FF would update it, and it did. After that, i installed the same outdated version of ad block plus again and went to about:config and set app.update.silent to true. I restarted FF to see if the addon would be updated automatically this time but it didn't, so i had to update it manually again.

So you have to manually check for updates for your addons on a regular basis. Checking update addons automatically doesn't work either. Same goes for clicking on reset all addons to update automatically.

I think you'll have to wait for an update to Firefox itself to truly test if it works, there's usually a minor update a week or so after a major version update. 58.0.1 was released nine days after 58.0.
