I use an extension called Smart HTTPS and when I run into one of those sites, I just click on it and add it to the white list.

I just checked it. I dont see windows defender anywhere on the list. I have tried checking and unchecking the option that says query ocsp responder servers to confirm the current validity of certificates, but didnt solve it.
I have also tried clicking on select one automatically with the same results.

Post a link to a problem site. If you can't post it here - p.m. me the link.
Well, i wouldnt call them problem sites, since they are just harmless websites, such as gaming websites like this one.
I only use a handful of websites that I trust, so i dont want firefox to interrupt my browsing. I want to disable the message that asks for certificates completely.
Also, what would some good security settings and addons be for firefox?
So far, i have enabled tracking protection, and i have checked the button that says send websites a do not track signal that you dont want to be tracked. I have also checked all the options in deceptive content and dangerous software protection.

Well i can visit that site but get a mixed content warning. Insecure content on secure page but the site isn't blocked.
I used to use a lot of decent FF addons but most of those won't work in Quantum. If interested in any of these let me know.
You might want to investigate the following options.Code:Extensions ---------- Name: CanvasBlocker Version: 0.4.4b Enabled: true ID: CanvasBlocker@kkapsner.de Name: Cookie AutoDelete Version: 2.1.1 Enabled: true ID: CookieAutoDelete@kennydo.com Name: eCleaner (Forget Button) Version: 0.1.5 Enabled: true ID: {13ea5d17-aa13-474a-b8cd-891073b53c66} Name: HTTPS Everywhere Version: 2018.1.11 Enabled: true ID: https-everywhere@eff.org Name: New Tab Homepage Version: 0.6.2 Enabled: true ID: {66E978CD-981F-47DF-AC42-E3CF417C1467} Name: TrafficLight Version: 1.1.1.3 Enabled: true ID: trafficlight@bitdefender.com
If you choose to remember history then you'd need to untick "Browsing history" in address bar search options.
RE: Fonts. Choosing your own fonts and sizes will mess up some sites. You can uncheck the following and refresh the page on those sites.
RE: Sometimes firefox blocks harmless websites and you have to click on add an exception to get access to the website.
I reckon you have a SSL certificate problem. Close Firefox and rename cert8.db to cert8.old then relaunch firefox. See if that helps.
RE: Crash reports. Try the following:
RE: addons not updating. Check:
A good security addon:

I don't get any pop up. There's a ton of about:config tweaks that I use but too many to post here and explain in detail.
RE: Forward/ Back buttons. You'd need to create then modify userChrome.css but it's not straightforward.
Download and some instructions here:
List of features available in this project · Issue #2 · Aris-t2/CustomCSSforFx · GitHub
Basically extract files into the Chrome folder you create in your profile then modify userchrome.css using notepad.
You can preview buttons in the images folder:
When editing the user chrome.css file:
ENABLING options: remove the combination of / and * before '@import'.
DISABLING options: add the combination of / and * before '@import'.
So for the back/ forward buttons in the screenshot I posted earlier:
Edit the file then save it.
