There's something quite strange going on here: Once again I have gone through all the steps kindly suggested by both Josey Wales and f14tomcat but still it reverts the the Norton Safe home page. Each time I go through the procedure I don't feel like I've actually completed the change. I keep looking for something like 'APPLY' to click but there's nothing there. Am I missing something perhaps?

I don't think you are. I just did those steps on mine. Changed from Google to Bing, click Home button and it went to Bing. Changed it back to Google, click Home and it went to Google. Norton must have something jammed in there like a fishhook. I don't do Norton, so you're back to Josey's suggestions.

Do you think it might be an idea if I speak to someone at Norton on their 'live chat' facility?

    Hey Feathers,
Check firefox addons for safe search and disable it, then you should be able to set your home page.

This morning I got a message from Norton (my security software) telling me to upgrade for free to Norton Safe. I did this and now it has made Norton Safe my home page.
I suspect OP has been phished.

Which Norton software was in use?

I use Norton 360, and it has Norton Safe Web as one of its many components (turned on). The panel/tab containing that component offers no configuration in regards to the Home Page. And my Home Page has not been compromised to date, knock on wood. It is highly unlikely the installed Norton would mimick such phishing tactic to have a valued user 'add' a non-revenue-generating component.

Anyways, Norton's support forum comprised of fellow users may be better equipped to address the Home Page issue as it relates to Norton Safe Web. But I lean towards malware infection.

I noticed "Web" has not been typed in the OP. So I may be assuming too much. If "Web" was not typed because it wasn't part of the added install, then it's very likely a phishing malware infection.

That's cracked it!! Well done Eagle51 and many thanks for your kind help. I went into Firefox Addons, selected Extensions then disabled Norton Safe Search. Then I went back and changed back to Google home page - and it works, in fact, I've tried it three times in case the first time was a fluke. Thank you again. (It does make one wonder whether the Norton Safe Search really does improve security, or is it just their way to get you to use their search engine????)

That's even more interesting! I've just re-enabled Norton Safe Search in Firefox Addons and it hasn't taken over the home page! I'm still getting Google home page each time I open Firefox.

Glad you got it! One other thing. With that addon, set it's option for update to OFF, not default or ON....to prevent Norton from giving it back to you if they try.

That is what I eluded to when I said to look at your extension/plugins but just glad you got it fixed.
