"View in Browser" takes me to MS Word, NOT a browser

Oh, sorry, I was still fiddling with my last post when you replied.
I had started typing from ten feet away but realised I had to come back to my desk to get the NirSoft link right.

Without knowing what you did with 'other instructions on the Internet' I am not sure what state you are in.
    - Perhaps all that those instructions did was help you get the existing View in browser function onto your toolbar for convenience.
    - Perhaps those instructions tried to create a new View in browser function that you then put onto the toolbar.
Since I wasn't sure, my suggestion about finding the View in browser function in your existing menus might have helped distinguish between an Outlook difficulty & a rogue third-party function.
But since you had not set the mht file association up then I imagine that is responsible for all the messing about.

    All the best,
    Denis

Where I found those instructions I really can say anymore. But here is the outcome of the work I did to get the “View in Browser” into the Outlook (2013) Ribbon.

Keep in mind that my work and suggestions are based on my initial need to print only a selection from an email message.
    A.
    In Outlook 2013
    Open a message (any)
    Click <File> tab
    Click <Option> in left menu
Click <Customize Ribbon> in left menu

    B.
    On the right
In box under <Customize the Ribbon:>
    Select "Main Tab"
Open the Ribbon Tab that you want to add the "View in Browser"
    Click + on "Home (Mail)"
(I suggest) Click + on "Printing"

    C.
    On the left
In box under <Choose command from:>
    Select "Main Tab"
    Click + on "Message"
    Click + on "Move"
    Click + on "Action"
Drag "View in Browser" to the right side to where you want it placed
The icon will likely be a round disk
    Click OK

    D.
With a message open, the View in Browser will now be in the Ribbon.
When you click it the first time you get the options:
(I don't have the exact wording, because you get that Window only once if you click “Don’t ask again” below)
First select the app that you want the message to be opened in.
The Edge doesn't work here, because when IE is disabled, Edge displays a simple unformatted character string.
When IE is enabled, Edge sends the .mht file to IE. Yes, even the Edge is dependent on old technology.
    The selection I recommend is:
    IE for the browser
Your choice to click “Don’t ask again”, but if you are not really sure, you can leave that choice until a later time when you have used this feature a number of times, and know that the browser works for you.

That’s it. Hope it works for you.
    All the Bets,
    Fritz

    Fritz,

    Understood.
Even though my Outlook versions are not the same as yours I can see that what you did merely placed the existing View in browser function on your toolbar so there is no possibility of a rogue function having been introduced.

The ability to customise the ribbon straightforwardly was a major advance introduced in Office 2010.
Customize the ribbon in Word - MSSupport
    - I can do the same in Office 2021.
    - For Office 2007, I have to do some quite intense coding to customize the ribbon. I bothered to do so in Excel & Word but, for Outlook & Access, I limited myself to adding my desired functions to Quick access toolbars instead.

    I understand.

My first exposure to the Ribbon was 2007. That experience stopped me cold to upgrade to Win 10 and Office 2013 until only just recently, when my Win 8.1 and Office 2003 became to much work to maintain operational.

Anyway, I am now not unhappy with Win 10 and Office 2013. But I am still not inclined to go the Office 365 path. I don't like the situation to renew the license annually. I see it as a money grab.

I dislike later versions. I used Office 2016 for over a year & tried my best to find solutions to its shortfalls.
    - The Outlook Calender user interface changed after Outlook 2007 and is nowhere near as good as it was.
    - The Outlook email user interface has been re-coloured into fifty shades of grey so that the email header cannot be distinguished from the email contents. Who in MS hates rainbows? Colours help interfaces rather than hinder them.
    - Excel & Access [datasheet view] have also had their colours clipped so that it is very difficult to stay on the right row as I scan my eyes across left-to-right. Camouflaging the difference between rows really slows me down.

I am starting to get a few problems with Outlook 2007 email but only for emails from WD tech support & replies to my questions from Amazon sellers. I understand that they use an html component in emails that did not exist at the time Office 2007 was current.

I bought a cheap Office 2021 just so I could understand forum discussions about it. I have it on a computer that I never use for any Office work.

    I share your pain.

BTW, your avatar, is that from near where you live?
With apologies about seeming nosy, but I am always curious about different locations.

Sorry, but that's not quite correct.
    • The choice to select which App to use, you will only get the first time.
    • If you don't click "Don't ask me again", you will each time only get the warning that safety/security settings will not be the same as Outlook.
    • If you don't select IE the first time you use the "View in Browser" button, then you will have to change the .mht default via your Windows "Setting" "Apps" "Default Apps" "Choose default apps by file type" then scroll down to .mht (not .hmt) (my earlier post saying .hmt wasn't quite accurate; I can't say where I got that from).
    • When you then use the "View in Browser" button, it will try to open in IE, but the Edge gets in the way. It will want you to open the Edge, but the Edge will not open the .mht file properly. You will only get an unformatted text string.
    • Resist the requests to use the Edge. Cancel or close those Windows.
    • Eventually you will get to IE.
    • When IE finally open the first time, select to use the "recommended defaults".
    • Next, IE will then present a notification at the bottom to "use Edge", but "Cancel" that. If you don't you will need to go through all the "Settings" (above) again.
    • Lasty, IE will ask to enable it's own add-ins. Do that based on your choice. Mine was for the "Classic Explorer", which I enabled.

Now things will likely be good.
If the sequence is a bit different on your computer I can only say "I feel your pain", but I can't apologize, it's just beyond my control, or experience.

I do hope this works for you,

I can use the options available in MSOffice Outlook 2021 to View in browser and it does indeed open in IE as an mht file. It's then perfectly happy for me to print only the selection.
I do not need to try any of the messing about that you are being forced into. It just works.
The procedure does not work, for the examples I've tried, in MSOffice Outlook 2007 even though the option does exist in this version.
I took the opportunity to re-do my settings and can now View in browser from Outlook 2007 as well.

Thanks for prompting me to check,

Well, I can see no sign of that option in Outlook 2010 - where might it be? Or what extra feature do I have to install/allow to see it?
