    Edge Problems--Home Page and Search

I continue to have two perplexing problems with Edge that started with 10158 and continue in 10159.

    1. Starting with 10158, MS finally gave us an Edge Setting to allow use of a Search engine other than Bing as default. Unfortunately, I've been unable to make the setting work. Has anyone else successfully changed the Edge default Search to Google in Build 10159?

    2. Prior to 10158, I was able to set my Home page to what I wanted using the Edge Custom setting. Starting with 10158 when MS finally gave us a Home Button, I've been unable to get my Start (Home) page to be what I set it for with the Custom setting. Edge always starts with Microsoft.com Bing Search page no matter what I tell it to do. I then require another click (Home Button is one way) to get my Home page. The new Home button, however, works as it is supposed to do. Has anyone successfully made Edge open to anything other than Microsoft.com Bing Search page in Build 10159?

    Hello CB,

Q1) I've had no luck with setting to Google yet either.

Q2) In Microsoft Edge, you have the "Startup page", and a separate home page for the "Home button" only.

    Hope this helps, :)

I have successfully changed this, but not with Google. It appears that a search engine must add some special code to their homepage to make this work. If you visit a site that has this code, then you can add that site to your search engine list. For me, visiting stackoverflow.com allowed me to add their site as a search engine. I'm sure google will have to make some change to enable this as well.

I don't know what this change is, but since it works for at least one site for me, it suggests there is something that needs to get done by the search engine.

There is a difference between the "start with" settings and the "Home page" settings. Home Page is set when you enable the home button.

    EDIT:

It appears that the site has to support the "OpenSearch" protocol. In stackoverflows head section it lists the following:

    Code:
    <link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" title="Stack Overflow" href="/opensearch.xml">
I don't see anything similar in google's head tags...

Thanks for your response, Shawn. However, I know HOW to set the page I want and had it working fine before 10158 came along. I've tried it dozens of times in 10158 and 10159 and it doesn't work for me.

Thanks also to Mystere. Yes, as I said in my post , the Home Button works as advertised. What doesn't work for me is selection of the "Start With" page.

There were some changes made to how you set a custom start page in Microsoft Edge. Did you remove all start pages except the one you wanted?

Yes, I did Shawn. BTW, I've been meaning to thank you for quite a while for all of your very informative and helpful Tutorials on all sorts of subjects. I have learned much from them and accomplished a lot using them.

Thanks a lot, Ed. I just tried Yahoo and that doesn't work either.

How are you getting that entry to even come up? It won't even show for me.

I was able to get DuckDuckGo to work as my default search engine. Although I had to fiddle with it.

Yes, Mystere, I wonder about that also. All that is darkened and unusable in my Edge Settings.
