    Microsoft Edge Favourites Problems

I am using Microsoft Edge, and for convenience I am adding pages into the favourites section for quick access to them. However, I have found over the last week that Edge is deleting these files without my input. So when I open Edge I find my favourites box is empty. What can I do to stop this?

Heard a lot of strange things about Edge but haven't heard it's deleting favorites by itself before.

You might end up having to reinstall and re-register Edge, here's a tutorial on how to do this https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...dows-10-a.html

Before you do that lets try some things. First lets make sure favorites are getting added using the correct icon.

How exactly are you adding a page/site to favorites? I checked mine to review how to add a favorite, it's the star icon in the upper right hand corner.

I usually use IE11, Edge is still missing basic browser functions like organize favorites, I'm not too familiar with it. But I can usually figure things out.

To save my web pages to favorites I obviously have an open web page, I then click on the gold star icon at the top right of the page, which gives me the drop down box to select ADD for it to be saved. It's the only way I know.

I used to use IE11 too as it's much better, but I started getting too many problems with it, such as pages freezing and script problems during browsing. (QUOTE)

That's the only way I know of too, sorry for asking the obvious but you don't know until you ask

I've also started seeing freezing and other puzzling behavior from IE11, IMO it's social engineering by MS to move users still on IE to Edge. The more difficult they can make it, the more likely users will stop using it.

Is there anything strange (other than IE acting up) that you've noticed while browsing with Edge? It seems to be a good browser except it's seems to be dumbed down, and directed mostly at touch screen users. It needs a more extensive Menu bar (File Edit View Favorites Tools Help)

I just opened Edge to review/recheck there isn't some setting that would stop a favorite from saving. I did notice when I clicked on the hamburger menu (3 lines) to open favorites mine came up showing history. Guess it remembers the last thing you looked at and that's where you start the next time.

Sorry I can't be of more help, maybe the install of Edge got corrupted somehow and a reinstall will fix it. That's happened before in earlier versions of W10. Might be the least hassle way to get it fixed by reinstalling Edge.

See this post Edge won't start Exception code: 0xc0000409

Reinstalling fixed the issues in that thread, might fix yours too. Good luck :)

Like you I think Microsoft let us down when they created Edge and failed to create a Menu bar, it was the tools option that I relied on a lot, when I needed to fix things and to set my home page, I am not happy being stuck with their home page as a default. I would complain if there was a link where we could do this.
I have tried that history link and it comes up with a lot of garbage, some that was saved temporarily, of which none that can be opened, and not one of those files covered recent favourites. Very tempted to switch to Firefox.

Anyway Steve, thanks very much for trying, your help was very much appreciated.

You can set your homepage to whatever you want easy enough, click on the 3 dots > settings > open Microsoft Edge with and select "a specific page or pages" then type in the URL of your homepage (I do a lot of cut and paste, copied from IE11 tools homepage and pasted into Edge)

At least the times I do use it I have my homepage when I open Edge, and under advanced settings I chose to have the home button displayed. Try to make it as familiar as I can.

There's a much easier way to reinstall/re-register Edge than the older link I posted, this was from post #2 in this thread, here's a link to Brink's tutorial https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...dows-10-a.html

Sounds like this is the only alternative and we can't be sure it'll fix the problem. It won't make it worse so you might give it a try.

You're welcome desertrat :) Good luck

Yeah, Microsoft Edge has been plagued with is issue for quite some time... Favorites just tend to magically disappear (typically associated with a windows update). For some, it happens more than once... and for countless thousands of others, it never happens at all.

There is a way to attempt to recover your lost favorites via the System Restore facility. However, this is problematic since it will completely reset your PC to some previous point in time... loosing everything that you've done since that time. Real computer geeks can use the ShadowCopyView utility to selectively restore just the parts you want.

We haven't heard from Microsoft what the root cause is... or how to prevent it from happening again. Instead, they merely suggest that you ignore the problem and reload your favorites from Internet Explorer.

However, "Reload your favorites, and hope it doesn't happen again"... isn't very comforting.

So, about the only thing that we can offer you is a way to perform a backup and restore of your favorites for "the next time" this happens. (Yeah, I know...)

There are several techniques that you can use to backup your favorites (after you've reimported them and fixed them the way you want them). There is a simple technique that only works if you're using the Edge "Sync your content" feature, and a more turn-key version where you install a 3rd-party application that can also protect a lot of the Edge settings

    1) If you are using "Sync your content", you can copy the contents of the %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\RoamingState for safe keeping. And then just copy it back after a crash/reset

    2) You can use the free 3rd-party EdgeManage application to import/export your favorites to an HTML-based "bookmarks" file or perform a full database backup/restore (plus many more features).* This technique works without regard to the "Sync your content" settings.
