The above technique I posted, is also a good idea for users with small devices and/or very limited disk space(such as Windows Phones or tablets), as they can use the online version of Outlook, Office, and Skype with out installing the software, and just click the "app" shortcut when they need it.

Cliff, Sorry, I see what you mean, I can place the shortcut anywhere except on the TaskBar ( it insists in adding it to the Firefox popup menu) Usable but not what was asked for

You can do the same with Chrome as with IE by following these steps:
how do I pin hotmail to taskbar-image-002.png

It creates a desktop shortcut, places one in Chrome apps(the first time it creates a folder for the web apps):

And on the Chrome apps page, it creates a shortcut also:

The desktop shortcut from Chrome can also be pinned to the taskbar, and then left open, or can be left running in the background if this is selected in settings how do I pin hotmail to taskbar-image.png

You have to add the prefix explorer.exe<space> to pin it to the taskbar:

    End of story

Well I had given up but the post from Cliff S was too tempting.
So I followed his advice to use IE and I almost made it but got Bing logo on taskbar which when expanded took me to OUTLOOK login page from which I was able to get Hotmail. Not good enough !!!
So I fiddled and farted and accidently got Outlook logo on taskbar from which I can open Outlook instantly which shows my Hotmail inbox.
I consider this and thank all those who contributed.
I cannot detail my moves from Bing logo to Outlook logo so I guess I am not contributing much. SORRY

Outlook and Hotmail are the same site. They are just two different usernames.

Understood Mystere. But now I can click on the Outlook logo pinned to the taskbar and get taken directly to my Hotmail inbox. I could not do that before..
