More Successful Windows Live Mail Tests

UPDATE: After all the testing I wanted to report back on further developments in the Hotmail/outlook.com/Windows Live Mail 2012 issue. These are my detailed instructions on what I got to work for me.
Originally, after applying the 12/17/16 version of the patch my account worked so long as I did not use the calendar. Then it dawned on me it was because neither of the accounts had as yet been converted to the new protocol. So I established a new outlook.com account and verified that it used the new sync protocol and sure enough it would not work even using the patched WLM. Not being one to give up easily I played around with this for days. I now have this account working in WLM using IMAP settings. So far so good. I believe it would also work using POP. Know that you still can't use the calendar. For anyone interested in trying this out here are the detailed instructions that I sent out to all my customers.
Outlook.com IMAP settings for Live Mail or MicrosoftOffice Outlook as well as Smartphones

First verify outlook.com account . Your account must be verified. If you need a new verification link, here’s how to get it:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft account websitehttps://account.microsoft.com/about , and select “Your info.”
    2. Select Manage your sign-in email or phone number.
    3. Select Verify next to the email address, and then Send me verification email. (If you do not see VERIFY then your account is already verified.)

    4. Choose your method (either text message or alternate email) to receive your code. Enter the code in the box

Second, In Live Mail remove your existing account by right clicking on it-select remove account
Click on File-Options-Email Accounts-click new and new account wizard will start.
Enter your email address, password, click save password.
    Also enter your name.
    Check “manually configure settings” Next

Set up Live Mail with the following settings

Use the following settings in Live Mail or smart phone when using IMAP.

    • Incoming (IMAP) Server
      • Server address: imap-mail.outlook.com
      • Port: 993
      • Encrypted Connection: SSL (Check server requires secure connection)

    • Outgoing (SMTP) Server
      • Server address: smtp-mail.outlook.com
      • Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)
      • Authentication: Yes
      • Encrypted Connection: TLS (Server requires secure connection is UNCHECKED)

    • User name: Your email address
    • Password: Your password

When you get through Right click on your account in the account list-select properties
Compare that your settings look like these in the following 3 photos substituting your information for mine, of course.

Now try sending an email to yourself to make sure it works. If it does STOP HERE.
If it doesn’t work check that all your settings are correct and try again. (Also check that your account needs to be re-verified as in first step.)

Imap should work great. But if it doesn’t you can set it up as POP.

First turn on POP for your Outlook.com account.

    1. Sign in to your Outlook.com account.
    2. Click the tools icon , and then click Options.
    3. Under Managing your account, click Connect devices and apps with POP.
    4. Under POP, select Enable.

Select Don't let devices or apps delete messages … to override any delete requests.
    – Or if you prefer –
Select Do what the device or app says … to allow devices and apps to delete messages from the inbox. Click Save.

Then set up your account use the following settings in your email app.

    • Incoming (POP3) Server
      • Server address: pop-mail.outlook.com
      • Port: 995
      • Encrypted Connection: SSL (Server requires secure connection)

    • Outgoing (SMTP) Server
      • Server address: smtp-mail.outlook.com
      • Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)
      • Authentication: Yes
      • Encrypted Connection: TLS (Server requires secure connection is unchecked)

    • User name: Your email address
    • Password: Your password
    • If you don’t want email to be deleted from your Outlook.com inbox after it’s downloaded to your email app, select the Leave a copy of messages on the server option.

Even if you accidentally set up POP3 to delete messages after downloading them, Outlook.com will save a copy of the mail in a folder called POP until you verify the POP3 delete command.

So, now that Microsoft is moving forward with this migration in the next ten days, and the patch (and Windows Live Mail 2012 itself) won't be officially supported, I’ve been looking into my alternatives.

Microsoft, with the e-mails they have sent out, is making it seem as if this will completely break WLM2012, but I’ve read elsewhere that while DeltaSync will no longer be supported, IMAP still will be. Thus, based on this idea, you could create a brand new instance of your e-mail account within WLM2012, and just configure it to use IMAP and it would still work. Or, you could install a third party e-mail client like Thunderbird to connect to your account using IMAP going forward.

The official Microsoft supported protocol will be MAPI (technically, MAPI/RPC), which is the proprietary protocol that Microsoft Outlook uses to communicate with Microsoft Exchange. Third party clients don’t seem to support this, but IMAP will still be available.

Can anyone else confirm any or all of this?

I know POP3 is supported and I'm 99.99% certain that IMAP is supported.
There are thousands of installations that use those protocols.

For the record ... MAPI is an architecture, not a protocol

I made a new account with outlook.com which is on the new server. I can confirm that imap works great for me
in WLM 2012 without the patch. I also tested it with pop which also works.
Be aware that when an email is deleted from WLM using imap that the server is automatically updated immediately. It does not go to the deleted folder in WLM. Once you hit delete it's gone. If you go with pop mail you will have to enable pop within outlook.com settings. Deleted email using pop does go to the deleted folder.

If you are going to be getting your email on multiple devices you should definitely use imap.

The question remains: will Outlook/Hotmail/MSN accounts keep working in WLM2012 with IMAP once Microsoft implements its changes in 10 days?

New email accounts are on new server

The new email account I established to test with was on the new server so nothing will change on 6-30 with it.
Therefore, logic says if it's working now as imap it will work then with imap. However, as we all know MS does not always use logic so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Can anyone here send me a copy of the Dec 17 update? I have the original first update installed on my machine and my Live mail is working fine (I don't use the calendar), but I need the patch to install on another PC of mine that now fails to send or receive email. I would rather not use the alternative method as the patch worked fine for me. Thanks so much! I've been looking for it for ages and dumb me deleted the download

Speaking of setting Windows Live Mail 2012 up with IMAP, I tested it on a fresh machine this week. A word of warning: Make sure to disable Junk mail filtering *before* having it connect for the first time, otherwise it will filter a bunch of your messages out of the folders you've organized and into the junk mail folder! Also, you might want to disable the special IMAP folders in the settings, otherwise it will create them on the server and can be confusing as to which folders are which.

I haven't tried it, but the way to go about this may be to configure it while not connected to the Internet. Then, once you've got it configured properly, connect and let it sync.

    IMAP & POP Settings

I can confirm that Microsoft provided email accounts still work in WLM 2012 when you manually set up the account as imap or pop. You have to remove the old account and establish a new account using the manual option with the following settings:
Note: I suggest using imap over pop whenever possible, especially when you get your email on multiple devices. Also note that your calendar and address book will no longer sync between devices anymore nor will your address book sync with webmail. These same settings work when you set up your account in your phone or ipad.

    IMAP
    IMAP is allowed by default
    • Incoming (IMAP) Server
    • Server address: imap-mail.outlook.com
    • Port: 993
    • Encrypted Connection: SSL (Check server requires secure connection)
    • Outgoing (SMTP) Server
    • Server address: smtp-mail.outlook.com
    • Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)Some routers block port 25
    • Authentication: Yes
    • Encrypted Connection: SSL (Server requires secure connection)
    • User name: Your email address
    Password: Your password

Test sending and receiving emails. The first time it tries to sync you will have to enter your password even though you entered it when setting up the account. If you have a problem in WLM right click on email account and select properties.
Verify that all your settings are correct.

    POP
POP is NOT allowed by default. You have to first go into webmail and allow pop.
    1. Sign in to your Outlook.com account in webmail (go to outlook.com).
    2. Click the tools icon , and then click Options.
    3. Under Managing your account, click Connect devices and apps with POP.
    4. Under POP, select Enable.
    5. Click Save.
Then in WLM remove your old account and set up new email account using manual settings.
    • Incoming (POP3) Server
    • Server address: pop-mail.outlook.com
    • Port: 995
    • Encrypted Connection: SSL (Server requires secure connection)
    • Outgoing (SMTP) Server
    • Server address: smtp-mail.outlook.com
    • Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)(some routers block port 25)
    • Authentication: Yes
    • Encrypted Connection: SSL (outgoingserver requires secure connection)
    • User name: Your email address
    • Password: Your password

Test sending and receiving emails, The first time it tries to sync you will have to enter your password even though you entered it when setting up the account. If you have a problem in WLM right click on email account and select properties.
Verify that all your settings are correct.
