I'm not arguing the link and how poor MS communication is. Pure from this letter itself, we still have many open questions about this. Don't we?

There are also many incompatibility reported on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 about this patch...
Could be. However, this is a Windows 10 discussion. So, to my way of thinking, adding other OS versions into the mix will only cause confusion. This seems very simple: this update is not for Windows 10 so don't install it on Windows 10. What open questions are left regarding Windows 10?

This is what I did to fix it:

First I just uninstalled Windows Live Mail from program and features add/remove programs (do not use the uninstall option from the patch file, that did not work for me). Look for Windows Live Essentials 2012 in add/remove programs and select to uninstall just the Mail app.
    Then re booted
Then I just used the installer for Windows Essentials named wlsetup-web.exe, I already had that one in my downloads folder on my C drive. But if you do not then you have to get it from Microsofts site. I opted to do a custom installation and just install the Mail app and not any other Essentials apps.

Once installed I once again re booted.
Thanks it worked. All my folders stayed the same. It showed calender updating but then continued and everything seems back to normal. Do not plan to try the update until they come out with a "fixed" fix!!
Then I opened it up and this time it did not crash directly like it did when I had the patch installed. But it would hang on me and not download any new e-mails but I noticed in my Cfos speed application that there was some network activity going on so I just let it sit there for a few minutes. But it was just sitting there using high CPU and grayed out. So after maybe 5 minutes I killed the process in task manager.

Then I re launched Windows Live mail again and now it worked normally again!

If you follow my steps carefully then perhaps it will for you to!

Now I do not know if I have the patched version or not installed. During the installation new files was downloaded from Microsoft servers so perhaps it is already pre-patched but I do not know. I guess I will know in a few weeks if it stops working on me.

Actually I already tried the patch several times. And of course, finally getting it to sync the calendar, which shows in the pane, is when it will not crash on opening. Once you click the calendar however, it will crash. So, I guess we can assume yours does the same and the best recommendation, since it currently works 'perfectly' without the patch, is to advise others to wait unit a compatible patch is issued for Win 10.
I guess it depends on how important the calendar is to the user. Since Microsoft seems to be mute about the issue in regards to Windows 10 they may or may not issue a fix for WLM in Windows 10. MS really is pushing their mail app which is junk compared to WLM. I just don't want to wake up some morning and mail not work as the mail part of Live Essentials is what is most important to me. Since I've got mail working as it should using the patch I can live with it and forget the calendar. Merry Christmas, everyone.

I guess the point would be that currently, it works correctly without the 'update'. If suddenly it doesn't work then I would try to see if the 'update' would restore at least the functionality you need. If not, then I guess those of us who like using WLM will be SOL unfortunately. Any how, if people want to install the 'update' on Windows 10, that is their choice. But they should be made aware of the problems with it.

I completely agree but unfortunately Microsoft at this point has not chosen to send out a follow-up email telling the general public what they should do or what they can expect. That is when people have to do a little work and rely on forums such as this one to better understand what is going on, why the update crashes WLM, and what their options are. That's bad, I know, but it is what it is. I have found you get much more helpful information from fellow users like the ones on this board than you will ever get from Microsoft. There are some really smart and knowledgeable people here. I am always amazed how many really savvy computer users will go out of their way to help people they don't know either by answering questions or just by sharing their own trial and error experiences.

    Hiya!

Have been using WLM happily for years and would like to keep doing so.

I've had 3 problems with this update, Version 2012 (Build 16.4.3563.0918):

    1) Couldn't connect to Hotmail accounts. Problem solved by just waiting a few hours :)

    2) There seems to be an encoding problem. After a certain amount of time, the normal font is replaced by a weird one, accents (in French, for example) do not display correctly and the text is bigger.
If I close/reopen WLM, the problem is solved... until next time. Problem not solved
    See below:

(left: problem, right: problem fixed by closing/reopening WLM)

    3) When I send an email from a Hotmail account, it doesn't display immediately in the "Sent" folder. It appears on hotmail.com, but not in WLM. After a few minutes, it finally shows up. Problem not solved

Edit: should probably mention I'm on Win7.

Just curious. Did you install the proper version of the update to match the version of WLM you had installed. (ie: if you had the English version of WLM installed you should have downloaded the corresponding English version of the update.) There is a drop arrow to the right of the update where you select the language. You may have to uninstall and reinstall Live Essentials and then do the update to get it straightened out.

I recently had the same problem and this worked for me:

    1. In the folder pane, locate C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Installer there is a repair utility.
    2. Run wlarp.exe file.
    3. Click Repair all Windows Live program.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to repair Windows Live program.

I did download and install the French patch, as I use WLM in French. The link provided in Microsoft's email brings you to a localized page.

I just tried this, let's see if it changes anything. What issue were you talking about? The coding or the missing Sent emails?
