Mmm, this new flag (in Canary) is very similar to the one that already exists in the new Edge:
    Chrome Canary:
    Attachment 233102
    Edge Canary:
    Attachment 233103
Could it be possible that Chrome is going to add fluent design elements soon? or they are going to add its own effects and style? anyway, it is quite interesting that this flag has appeared after a similar flag has been present in Edge for a long time...
MS and Alphabet aren't in colusion are they?

I seem to remember seeing that one of the things the MS will bring to Chromium is improved touch features.

By the way, in another comment I showed some of the animations that appear when you enable that flag in the new Edge:

Now in Canary, the Settings are not hidden in a hamburger menu:

This is interesting because is very similar to how the Settings work in the new Edge...

And thanks to a new flag there is a better animation when moving the NTP icons:

    Stable version.

    Canary version.

Will the tiles with the most visited sites return to the NTP?.

Google is currently testing a new personalization menu for the NTP in Chrome Canary, one of the new options of this menu will be the possibility of hiding the shortcuts, but above that option and next to "My shortcuts" appear the "Most visited sites":

I think that in the future it will look like this:

A new flag that recently appeared in Canary also suggests that these tiles could return:

Many users didn't like the change that Google made in the NTP, icons instead of tiles, we will have to wait because currently this new menu is not functional, something normal in these early stages.

Another image of how I think the new menu will look:
