There is a new patch in Gerrit about the "Read later" feature and it seems that a new menu will be added to the star icon of the omnibox, it will have two options: "bookmark this tab" and "save it for later", by clicking on the second option, the tab will be saved in the "Read later" menu, maybe something like this:

I see the search behaviour in the latest Version 85.0.4183.83 is different. Before when you started typing a search string in the main search box on the Google home page, the search text would appear in the address bar. Now this doesn't happen and the search string remains in the main search box.

Yes, I read a while ago that they were going to do that.

The new menu is now available in Canary (v87.0.4245.0):

After clicking on "Add to Read Later", the tab closes and is saved in the menu (this still doesn't work well), if you click on "Add Bookmark", it opens the normal menu that allows you to save the bookmark.

According to the commit, it could be possible that in the future they will also add a new entry in the tab context menu that will also allow saving the tab (or tabs) in the "Read later" menu.
