major geeks - I would rather download from there than some 'official sites' - I have seen loads of spy and malware from official sites that malwarebytes and AVG have spotted. I also have spywarebalaster running in the background. Major Geeks state that they have checked everything they load up for bugs.

Unfortunately it's very difficult to determine if a site has been spoofed or redirected as it happens too quickly. Only thing to do is get a reputation going with a known site and stick with it until proven it is no longer deserved. I have Majorgeeks on my browser's toolbars.

Of course, you can always run Unchecky. Unchecky - Keeps your checkboxes clear Note "https:" in the URL.

From Wikipedia: HTTPS consists of communication over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) within a connection encrypted by Transport Layer Security or its predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer. The main motivation for HTTPS is authentication of the visited website and protection of the privacy and integrity of the exchanged data.

For me, if the "official site" I want to get an app from has https: in its URL, that's about as safe as I can get.

For those who expected Firefox 50 to land today, it's been delayed a week for further improvements.
