There is another way, but only for Firefox and only if you use webmail: outlook.com:
    Try this:

Go to "about:config", and put the value "gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost" to true.

Then in the menu choose option "Developer" and click on "Scratchpad".

Paste the following text in the editor:
    javascript:navigator.registerProtocolHandler('mailto','http://mail.live.com/secure/start?action=compose&to=%s','Live Mail');
    and click on "Run".

Now go to "Options", "Applications", tab content type "mailto" and select the option "Use Live Mail"

    Alas

    I use Chrome and Gmail.

Why won't Microsoft fix this issue - you'd think it would be quite simple considering it's worked forever with Windows until they broke it in Windows 10!

    Sheesh!!!

They may be getting hassled about it now, and may fix it?

I'd like to think so but I'm not hopeful as there doesn't seem to have been any input from a Microsoft employee on this thread.

How can they get feedback? I mean, Windows 10 has been out for over a year now. Microsoft is not known for listening to their customers.

Everyone that has contributed to this thread is a Junior Member.

Seems to reflect something odd - why aren't more experienced - longer time users on this thread or indeed complaining about this issue!

    Coincidence does not prove causality

( for some reason, this reply editor is putting text at the end of lines, unto the line above it, instead of wrapping into the next )

Probably they don't see it as an issue. Their experience tells them that not all the settings can be reached through the Settings app. Some of them can still only be found in Control Panel. Apparently this is where you have to go to set the MAILTO protocol....

I did manage to find that location (Start menu, Settings, Default apps, Set default by apps, select Microsoft Edge, select Choose defaults for this program). But of course there is no default mail client on the list.
    This does work:

    Windows+X
    Control Panel
    Programs
    Default Programs
Associate a file type or protocol with a program
Scroll down to Protocols and select MAILTO
Double-click and select Microsoft Outlook or whatever mail program you want to use

I already accessed and set those settings, and it still won't work from any browser.
