I already have FF set for googlemail default. And its my default browser. It makes no difference. There is no option for webmail.

You need to setup mail.to handler in your browser too, I think chrome should have it similar.
When you open gmail, you should see a little email icon in a bar, click on it to allow gmail.

Its really very simple. When I click on an email address on site, it opens Windows Mail. I dont want that, I want it to go directly to gmail, I dont use windows mail. When a site says 'contact us here' on it goes to Mail. There is no identifiable link for me to cut and paste.

I used to be able to substitute gmail for live mail, outlook mail or whatever. I cannot do that now. MS have monpolised the settings to open only outlook, mail etc.

in this context gmail on desktop, which i have, is not the solution.

It admits the account but refuses to authenticate. I need to try a couple of things first.

I went to a site I know only had email here, and clicked on it, windows mail opened, so I checked add details and google had appeared. So I put in my gmail details and it refused it.( twice).

Sign into the account via the web, go to My Account/Sign-in & security, scroll to the bottom and switch 'Allow less secure apps' ON

Did you also enable IMAP within the account?

    Re: Gmail as default email-000013.png

If you have 'Less secure apps' enabled and IMAP enabled, it should authenticate.
