The ver. (Firefox/Chrome) is not compatible with the ver. of Win I run

    Hello to everyone.

    I've created one Windows 10 PE,following this tutorial :

Build a custom WinPE without third party tools like WinBuilder

So,basically these are the steps that I've taken :

    1) downloaded : WAIK and installed Deployment Tools (adksetup.exe)
    2) downloaded and installed : Windows PE (adkwinpesetup.exe)
    3) launched : Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment
    4) copype amd64 C:\WinPE
    5) extracted : boot.wim from the Windows 10 ISO file vers. 19041
    6) mounted : dism /Mount-Image /ImageFile:C:\WinPE\media\sources\boot.wim /index:1 /MountDir:C:\WinPE\mount
    7) added files and folders : copied the following files and folders into C:\WinPE\mount\ and got the error that you see on the picture :

The ver. (Firefox/Chrome) is not compatible with the ver. of Win I run-istantanea_2024-04-13_11-49-36.png

    8) unmounted & commited changes : dism /Unmount-Image /MountDir:C:\WinPE\mount /Commit
    9) created ISO : MakeWinPEMedia /ISO C:\WinPE C:\WinPE\WinPE-10.iso
    10) virtualized the ISO image of WinPE 10 with the bhyve hypervisor on FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE.

Basically I would like to launch the portable versions of Firefox and Chrome, but they won't run because the error : "this version is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running".

Why I get that error ? How can I fix it ? thanks.

If you are still in WinPE then that message merely means they cannot run in WinPE.
Being portable does not mean being able to run in non-Windows OSes like WinPE.

Running a modern browser in WinPE is not an easy task, because PE isn't a normal execution environment. It works well with limited, self-contained apps. To run a browser, you need something like Win10XPE toolkit.

Why? It's not as simple as extracting some install files and copying them into the mounted PE folder.

PE toolkits like Win10XPE have add-on's where someone has taken the time to figure where to relocate the app's files and DLL's to WinPE, and add the missing registry entries. If you look at their work, it takes a lot of effort to port Firefox or Chrome.

Some of the portable apps are repackaged for full Windows, which PE is not.

man,can I redistribute PE images ? Is PE like a regular version of Windows ? Does it requires licenses ?

You're not allowed to redistribute WinPE images It's still MS software, and you're breaking the license agreement.

This is why you see WinPE builders, they allow users to make their own images. PE is a compact form of Windows, missing many of the runtime services and libraries. It's there to serve as a boot environment to run Setup, or host a small scripting environment for basic tools.

There is no license activation, because it's not a full Windows. PE has a default time limit to stop working after 72 hours, but many users know how to bypass it. If you want to learn about running full apps in PE, there's TheOven.org forum. But be warned, it's not as simple as copying a few random files around.

If we are not allowed to redistribute WinPE images, why they do this ? For the project that I would like to accomplish and for the kind of users that it is aimed for,no one will accept to grab my image if it against the EULA. At this point I think that I will try to use ReactOS,that's open source.
