    dedicated arrows for youtube

1 of the most annoying points of computing currently in my life concerns keyboard shortcuts in youtube. The function of the left and right keys, rather than being of a single use, also changes the volume, dependent on the area of last mouse click. Often normalize the volume as a video begins but then inadvertently need to rewind , only realizing the focus for these keys is still on the volume. To return the focus to the video would be a useful keyboard shortcut to have as needed. Toilsome, it is to notice the key is actually lowering the volume, before needing to reach the mouse to click on the video, pause / unpause the video after which one may return to the keyboard to seek. This is my current method, but is there a way to return focus to keyboard seeking without pausing / unpausing the video?

up and down are for volume
left and right are for scrubbing

there must be something else going on because it works no issue. if you are clicking anything at any point so this includes browser too not just the video frame then there is potential for that control to become focused which will override the controls to that focused control instead of the video frame.

if you ever find that you focus something by accident you can tab controls by pressing tab for forward tabbing or holding shift while tabbing to go backwards. I would use this to focus the timeline and then space on it 2 times so that you are focusing the video properly.

After changing the volume slider with the mouse, then use the left / right arrow keys, they function to adjust the volume instead of scrubbing the video progress bar. Is this not the usual behavior?

The main element on a youtube video will be the video frame all the controls that are in that frame like the buttons and everything else will be child elements.

Once you click the volume slider you are focusing the volume slider's element it then means that the slider has focus so when you are using the controls that element is the only thing receiving the commands.

    - Click the slider with your mouse you will notice that once you start using the arrow keys there should be a blue box surrounding that element. The blue box is your selected element and it means that it has focus and the shortcuts will only work inside that most of the time depending on how they set the functionality to work.

You can either click off of that with the mouse like on a blank area of the web page or you can tab to focus something else or you can click the video frame to focus that and the controls will work again.

Another thing you should be doing
    - Using tab and shift + tab to move back and forward you will see the blue box move around to your selection. Space bar to activate.

The video frame will be focused when you first load the page so that is why the controls will work but then as soon as you click something with the mouse you feel like it beaks the functionality.

Thanks for pointing out that clicking in the white space after adjusting the volume returns the focus to the player. It seems like an area to improve, however, as the left and right keys is redundant with up and down when the focus remains on the volume slider. Wish these keys were simply dedicated to scrubbing the video.

Yeah its finicky because of how it is i guess, The keyboard controls also work for the browser so this can get in the way at times. I think it can be disabled but i can't recall how.

i find that i have issues with that when i watch live streams. Often i will go to type something in chat and i press the arrow keys to do volume or something and the main scrollbar for the browser will send me way down into the comments or sometimes i press space to actually space between words and it will pause the stream making it so i have to refresh the page to catch back up to real time. because i forgot what i was focusing.

Maybe try a Youtube front end. For me:

Left/ Right arrows control seek (position) and Up/Down arrows control volume.

    Invidious:

    Piped:

Not all instances are equal. Not all instances offer the same settings. If there's a problem choosing another instance usually works.

    Or consider FreeTube Client:
