How to disable IE redirect to Edge when opening a local XML file?

    Hi all,

My company uses a third party program that outputs XML files. These files are only displayed correctly in IE. They do not display correctly with any third party XML handler I have ever tried. I open and print hundreds of these files daily.

This was not a problem when they opened natively in IE. I simply opened the file and clicked the print button in the toolbar.

Now that they are redirected to Edge, I have to click the "reload in IE mode" button on every single XML file I open. Also, there is no way to add a "quick print" button to the Edge toolbar, so now I have to use "ctrl+p" to bring up the system print dialog for every XML file I want to print.

Needles to say, this has added immense amounts of time wasted to my workflow.

Is there some way to disable redirecting to Edge when I'm opening a local XML file? Is there a standalone offline version of IE that I can use simply to open these files? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

(windows version number 22H2 OS Build 19045.3930)

I open xml files in Firefox. I think they appear the same way they did in IE.

Might your opening IE script be adapted for use in the SendTo folder so the OP could use that to open xml files in IE?

Hi Denis, thanks for the response.
I did try other browsers at one point a while ago and nothing would display the XML file correctly.

However, I followed the link you posted and read through that thread, and I found a semi-solution.
MyIE9, that someone else in that thread suggested. It's basicly a stand alone version of IE.
Still can't put a "quick print" button on the toolbar (something that skips the dialog box and just prints the page immediately), but i changed the print command key to F1 so at least it's a faster process now.

Yes. The easiest method would be to use LaunchIE.exe:

LaunchIE | Launch Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 or Windows 11

I think LaunchIE should work for you, but is it possible to post a sample of one of these XML files? I'd very much like to see the display problem first-hand to see if there is any other solution.

It seems to me that in the long run your company needs to drag itself out of the 19th century and come up with a modern day solution.

But that's the only 19th century computer I could find.

Thanks for the link to LaunchIE. I just finished trying it. Works great, the only thing i noticed was it doesn't open multiple files as tabs in an existing instance and it seems to have some weird issue with remembering the window size/position.

I'll keep using both LaunchIE and MyIE9 and see which works out better.

I've attached a sample of the XML files I'm dealing with. Have fun, let me know if you find anything out.

Unlikely. The software is proprietary Japanese machine control programming. The XML files are the reports that are generated from the program. *shrug* Out of my hands.
