Here is a brief tutorial: Firefox..move tabs below address bar
    1) create a folder chrome in your user profile
    2) copy the CSS-code (post #19) into a text file named 'userChrome.txt' and rename it 'userChrome.css' (letter C in capital !!)
    3) copy the userChrome.css file into your chrome folder
    4) type about:config in the browser address bar
    5) confirm the warning messages
    6) type toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets and toggle it to true
    7) restart Firefox

Thanks very much for that, especially for the info about using a capital C. I'll work though the sequence now.

    Edited to add:

    I did it, adding chrome/userChrome.css to AppData/Local/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles

I then did the registry tweak and restarted Firefox (the latest version) - nothing had changed. And when I checked about: profiles userchrome.css did not appear on the list.

Should I add the new material to AppData/Roaming... as well? I'll try it and see what happens.

The chrome folder must be created in your roaming user profile, not the local one.
    Mine looks like: C:\Users\******\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\a1devyhij.default-esr\chrome\

The letter combination after profiles\ are different for every user.

Ah, that's where I went wrong. I'll try again. Thanks.

    :Edited to add:

This is getting silly. Still no change and no new profile in the about: profiles list. I'll check through every step: presumabluy I must have made a mistake somewhere (well, either that or this computer simply doesn't like Firefox).

    Edited again:

Got it. I've been adding the Chrome folder as a separate item in the main Profiles folder rather than in my existing profile folder. Presumably it has to go into the folder of the current default profile: there are several others there as well.

    OK, having another go...

Just follow the directions in the first post in the Taming the Beast Part 2 topic.

Just do the about:config tweaks, then download the "Chrome 4.3.4.zip"
Open it an put the Chrome folder inside... into...

    C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\0xxxxx8f.default-release folder, and restart Firefox.

If there's already a Chrome folder in there... just delete it, and then put the new one in.

This is what is IN Chrome 4.3.4.zip...

The RED dot is ARI's userChrome.css file, and the BLUE dot is where one can put custom code.
At the bottom of ARI's userChrome.css file, is a line that "calls"... the my_userChrome.css file.

At last! That's got me almost there:

Thank you. There are still some tweaks I'd like to do: your screenshot from yesterday represents my ideal layout, especially with the File, Edit, View... commands in the bar above the address bar. But this has been a major step forward.

In that same first post.... keep reading... "Links for the more energetic" at the bottom.

Mainly, the pic at the very bottom of that first post.

If you right click where the BLUE dot is.... that will get you to the Customize page in Firefox.
There... you can turn on the Title bar, the Menu bar, and you can drag and drop things to and from the bunch of stuff at the top.

By this stage of the game (and since I imagine you have already decided that I'm a complete idiot) you won't be in the least surprised to hear that I see no blue dot. But I'm sure it must be there somewhere so I shan't give up.

Bottom pic in post #27... in THIS topic.

I just added the BLUE dot to the pic, to indicate that you right click on any blank spot at the top of Firefox.
When you right click.... choose: Customize Toolbar.

    Or....
Press the left ALT key to temporarily bring up the Menu Bar.
Then choose: View > Toolbar > Customize Toolbar.

There's tons of things you can do on the Customize page in Firefox. Take your time, read the whole page, etc.

There, you see? Complete idiot. OK, I'm getting there, thanks. There are still some things to restore, including the menu bars, the + sign for adding a new tab, and a few others, but I'll look forward to exploring around to find how to do it all, after lunch.
