How do I KEEP Chrome as default?

I continually select Google Chrome as my default browser, but frequently when I do a search I get responses from Bing or Edge. I usually can put Google Chrome in e.g., Bing's search box but Bing returns. I've used Chrome's settings and frequently need to delete browsers and save, but after a few searches Bing or Edge returns. I've also used the Windows apps preferences with the same results - my preferences don't stick.

How do I get Chrome to remain my dafault browser?

    when I do a search
    - where/how are you starting your search?

    a. using Chrome
    b. using the taskbar search box?
    c. some other way

How do I get Chrome to remain my dafault browser?
Are you saying you find that in Settings your default browser is changing?

    Thanks.

I start with using Chrome search box but where I begin search doesn't matter. I've continued to use settings to ask for Chrome to be default.

Some search methods in Windows (e.g. the Search box in the Task Bar) will default to Bing and Edge result, no matter what your Preference and/or browser options are.

What search method are you using i.e. where are you searching from?

And thank you for your reply.

Actually it does, and you haven't definitively answered the question
Are you saying you find that in Settings your default browser is changing?
There are cases as idgat says where a search will use the bing search engine, and launch Edge (but the latter does not necessarily mean the default browser has changed

There are 2 different issues here.
    1. which search engine is used (that can be set in the browser- any browser can use 1 of a range of search engines
    2. in which browser the result is displayed

If you never want to see results in Edge, e.g. from taskbar search or by clicking News and Interests for example, then get
    MSEdgeRedirect (free).
This ensures your default browser is used, not Edge.

Note: to stop web searches from the taskbar, should you wish to, see the relevant tutorial.

Thanks to you both. I have several points of confusion - possibly due to differences in British English and American English.

What "taskbar" are you referring to? I think of the taskbar as the linear box that holds app icons and generally defaults to the bottom of your monitor. A search of "taskbar" in Windows "settings" seems to refer to that. I never use that area to invoke browser searches. I generally use one of the search boxes that have a magnifying glass like the ones in screen captures 2 or 3 in my post image.

Are you saying you find that in Settings your default browser is changing?
I don't think so, but on many occasions I find eligible browsers listed when I invoke Chrome settings (e.g., Yahoo, Bing, others not recognized) but Chrome remains default. I delete non-chrome browsers but continue to have some invade my searches.

This may appear to be a trivial issue but it isn't for me. I've used Chrome or its predecessors for more than 30 years and have had browser invasions only recently, I won't present details here but the invaders have characteristics that I don't like and I want to have Chrome as my only browser.

I appreciate your help on this - thanks.

    Referring to your screen capture:

When I mentioned Settings I was thinking of Windows Settings as in the Settings app.

This is one of the browser-related default settings:

That you're being prompted within Chrome to set it as default suggests it isn't...

Considering the search engine used.. see this Chrome setting:

Give this program a try. Default Programs Editor

This is exactly why I run a stripped down version of 10. Edge and all that senseless crap is gone.

We still have insufficient evidence despite me trying to determine what the concern is about Chrome as default or not (as in association/default browser) - or quite what the comment relates to.

Unfortunately removing Edge can have side effects- like very occasionally an update won't install.

Plus those items that are hard-linked to Edge become non-responsive.

    Solution: MSEdgeRedirect

(And I dislike Edge now and don't use it - it has become so much slower and resource intensive - with added popups- not what it was at all).

Fine with me personally. I don't use updates like others do. I mean, I don't wait till patch Tuesday and update like I absolutely must or else I'm immediately a victim of malware or some hacker crap.

Truth of the matter is I've never payed attention to updates and only installed updates needed for functionality with programs and hardware and have never had my computer hosed down by malware or whatever. I've been this way since Windows 98se. Yet I see users all across the Internet landscape and on tech forums much like this one pay homage to the patch Tuesday god and still get malware. LOL! Really?!

In a nutshell I think a vast amount of those so-called "updates" are a load of crap. And they DO come packed with telemetry. This is why I can use the AtlasOS script since the breaking of updates is a zero issue for me. I also do things differently on my computer than others would too... So that helps.

All about the money. Windows 10 onwards whores out and turns PC users into Redmond's little cash cow... The acronym PC doesn't exist anymore.
