Your thoughts on the 'New' Outlook?

You may have noticed that MS is promising (Scratch that) threatening to do away with the Calendar app in 2024 and migrate that and People into 'new' Outlook.

Just run Calendar and you'll see a banner with an option at the top to try it.

I set a restore point and did so.

    1. Outlook requires you to add an email account.
This requires everything to be synched to the MS cloud.
I do not wish to do so.

    2. I could not add an account
When I tried to add an account.. the options are limited to a limited range of providers
I tried with my gmail account, but my valid password and logging in to my gmail account wasn't recognised by the new Outlook sign-up procedure.

Those email addresses I have with other providers would not be accepted. (There is an 'Other' option, but that didn't work for me either).

    3. I could not create a new outlook account.
There's a 5 stage anti-robot check involving moving a person around a set of seats.
Did the first one.. then the box was completely blank.
    Unable to continue.

(I have been faced with that security check elsewhere, and it worked).

    4. There was no option to revert, given where I'd got to.
An attempt to launch Calendar opened new Outlook- but as above, I could not complete sign-up.
Currently waiting for System Restore to complete.

All I want for Christmas is a Ca - len - dar, a Cal - en - dar, oh a Cal -en- dar.

The Calendar app is neatly integrated into the Action Centre. Any other option won't be.
I've tried UK Kalendar; it works, but not as neat.

Suggestions welcome! Do share your experience...

i'm using the new outlook and had no problems adding 5 email accounts , 2 from gmail , 1 from microsoft , and 2 "others" (pop/imap).
so far it works great not had any problems with syncing or searching for specific mails or whatever.

Thanks, glad it worked for you. Took me a System Restore and then a further restart to get apps working again after that.

I'm not interested in Outlook for mail at all... just a functional calendar. I wonder if you could advise how that works with the new Outlook?
    - How do you view a calendar
    - How do you receive notifications
    - Is it integrated with the Action Centre in a similar way? (You can create new events in the Action Centre with the existing Calendar app.

I have just discovered my existing Calendar data is all available on line.. via

in the action center ,just like new mails. (app has to be open though)

not that i'm aware of ,don't see any option for that.

i never make use off a calendar so it's not a bother for me

    Thanks again
app has to be open though
    - another plus for the existing Calendar app which you can simply close.. no GUI impact (taskbar or tray) - neat.

Others I've tried have to be left running in the usual way.

Point 1. is not true despite what Microsoft says in it's rather obscure manner of error messages.

I do not use syncing to MS cloud, use Local Account in Windows, but can Setup New Outlook with some common Email Accounts, but not an old ISP provided one which works OK with the Mail App.

This applies to both Windows 10 and 11. I still use the Mail App as well as having New Outlook installed.
So your point 2. is true as I have found out as well.

Point 4. I still have the Mail App working on all Email Accounts, so no need for a restore point.

On the Windows 11 Laptop it initially auto selects a MS Email Account.

On Windows 10 it auto selects the incompatible Account and refuses to set it up but gives troubleshoot button and seems to send errors to MS.
Recently changed to auto selecting an MS Account, but also refusing to have any alternatives in the drop down box for security settings, error message also changed.

Maybe it's trying to be smart as in the second W10 case the other suggested Email address in the drop down box is an Outlook One, no mention of others which are compatible.

The incompatible account has been use for 8 years with the Mail App so easy to check right details are being input.

All this very much confirms it as still being in Beta.

Hi, I wonder if you could help me to help a friend faced with a nightmare of inherited accounts (from utilities to email) for which appropriate details are not available/were not handed over- a nightmare of disorganisation.

With the new Outlook, can you see details of the passwords for your email accounts?

Presently the Mail app is used, and I believe they are inaccessible in that. Someone else who has access to the PC swapped the system over to new Outlook, causing some difficulty. My friend has now swapped that back to the Mail app.

3 Talktalk (UK) and 1 Gmail account are in question.

Of course, another option may be to reset the passwords- my friend isn't certain yet whether she can complete this. I've sent her the details for the Talktalk procedure, and someone has an appropriate mobile phone number related to the Gmail account now.

This is just a small part of an overwhelming workload related to 7 properties for which my friend is wholly or partly responsible on a voluntary basis- significant maintenance issues and normal issues related to managing these present a massive burden.

    Thanks.

Thanks. I suspect that would be beyond her ability and time to attempt given the severe difficulties with so many issues.

All I'm looking for is a simple statement please.

Can you - or can you not- view the account passwords specifically in new Outlook (not one that comes with Office) - but the new Outlook that is replacing the Mail app?

(In Thunderbird, this is relatively easy - 3rd party is better! - Lesson I've learnt the hard way).
