Can't connect new Outlook to my AOL email account

    Windows 10 Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.3570)

I have been using the Windows 10 email system successfully for a long time with my original AOL email account. Windows 10 is now offering the ability to "try the new Outlook." I am trying to do this, but can't get it to connect with my AOL email. It asks me to enter my IMAP password (which is the same as my AOL email password). I enter this and I get a popup saying it needs to sync my emails to the Microsoft Cloud, but when I click "Continue" I get an error message saying "something went wrong with this account setup - Try again or use a different account." I then tried doing the Advanced setup and manually entered all of the information (IMAP and SMTP server names and port numbers, etc.), but I get the same result. I checked and double checked to make sure I was accurately entering the information. Is there anything else I can try, or should I just conclude Outlook will not work with my AOL email? Thanks!

Addendum: And now my regular Windows 10 email is no longer working with AOL either. I changed my AOL password to make sure I was entering the correct password in everything. I can log in to AOL on the web using this password but I have entered the new password into my Windows 10 email but just keep getting an error message saying I need to update the password, but after entering the new PW several times, it just keeps telling me it is wrong (identical PW that works when I access my AOL email on the web). Help?

The New Outlook is in Beta, and as far as I know is, as yet, only compatible with Microsoft(Outlook) Mail and Gmail.
A mouse over of the Try switch in the Mail App should say that.

It is a replacement in late 2024, so best to stick with the Mail App for the moment.

You will have to remove the AOL account from the Mail App. Start again and Add the account.

Thanks! OK, I will give up on the new Outlook. But I still can't met Windows 10 mail to connect with AOL now. I removed it and added it again to Windows 10 mail, but it is still telling me "we couldn't access this account. You might need to update your password or give the account permission to sync to this device." I am certain I am entering the correct password. Is there anything else I can try? Or something obvious I am doing wrong?

Actually you're twixt the devil and the deep blue sea, rock and a hard place, ... etc.

On one hand you're using an outdated, no longer supported, now flawed email client but trying to move to still-in-development (and thus frequently unreliable/unstable) email client.

Try a third party email client like Thunderbird (free) or eMClient (free for up to 2 accounts)

Get more details of requirements from AOL, there is more than just a Password.

You will likely need Incoming/Outgoing email Servers and Ports used.
Authentication and SSL requirements so that you can tick or not the relevent boxes.

In the Mail App the port number comes after the server address and a colon.

You have to keep trying, it is easy to get it wrong or not press the Done and Save buttons.

Use POP or IMAP to sync AOL Mail on a third-party app or download your email - AOL Help

The help coming from AOL is incomplete and confusing.

Once you have it done and working take a screen shot of the settings.

The Mail App is supported and is regularly updated. Been using it for 9 years so I do have real experience.

    Hello All -

You will need to create an app password for the AOL to work with the new Windows Mail Outlook.

Go to AOL signin and click your name -> Account Security
Scroll down to App Password -> Generate and manage passwords
Name the password - I use "Outlook"
Use the generated password for the windows mail to outlook update, just take out the spaces

How to access AOL email on new Outlook

This is a common problem with a number of email compilers. Go to your AOL mail account on the web. In the upper right corner, hover over your profile picture, and then click Account Information. Sign in if required. You will be on the personal info page. Near the top, click on security. Under Account Access - How You Sign in to AOL, there will be a link to generate and manage app passwords. Click the link. It will bring up a new window, "Generate a New Password." It will ask you to enter in your app's name. Enter Outlook. Then click generate password. Copy the new password. Please note, this does NOT change your password.

Open Outlook. Either go through the set-up process, or if you already have done so, just add new account. When Outlook asks for your password, use the aol-generated password with the paste option. Complete the setup.

What a detailed guide! However, it seems I made a mistake at some stage. My password has been changed, are there any other problems that could arise?
