    Trouble setting up talktalk mail

I have just bought a computer with windows 10 pro operating system.
I am having problems setting this up, it keeps the information I put in, but I cannot send or receive email.
I get the message : we couldn’t access this account, you might need to update your password or give account permission to sync to this device,
The sync icon has a bar running through it
I have talktalk mail on iPhone, iPad and MacBook, no problem
    Please help

Hi, at present we have no idea of how you are trying to access mail.

    Assuming the Mail app:
I've noted this a couple times from people with this kind of problem:
My advice is to delete the account and go to Accounts in Settings to add a new email account. When you select add an account use the Advance option. You will need details of the setting to use. It did work for me but I still needed to try a few times to get it to work.

These problems are because the Microsoft Mail app is useless. Other apps just set up email account without any problem. You could try another app. Perhaps Microsoft will do something if we all move to other providers.
    Possibilities include:
    - via a browser (probably not as you are setting something up)
    - via the Mail app included with Windows (not my preferred option at all)
    - via a 3rd party email client (which?)

Whether Pop3 or imap - presumably the latter as you are referring to sync.

    You've no doubt seen

    and
    Email settings | SMTP, IMAP & POP3 | TalkTalk Help & Support

    Further, I'm assuming you mean
    talktalk.net

rather than ones of the other servers Talktalk supports as legacy such as onetel or tiscali.

Please post screnshots as appropriate to show your settings, obscuring email address and password.

You can also confer with TalkTalk representatives, who will try to help although they of course plead they don't support email clients.

I'm also assuming you're not integrating your client with a SPAM filter program, which complicates things.

    Hello
    Many thanks for your reply
Yes, I have looked at all the talktalk settings too
I have contacted the talktalk people but have had no reply yet
I have tried Thunderbird but I am getting a message I need to update password or my username or password are incorrect
I have checked and double checked, I am mystified why this is happening
Once again thanks for your help

Usually if you phone them you can get thru to tech support- but don't expect too much especially with an email client.

Assuming you are trying to set up account as imap, try POP3 instead as an experiment.

I use POP3 with my tiscali and onetel TalkTalk accounts. No experience of talktalk.net.

You need to get the port and SSL/TLS correct too. Note that Tbird has settings in different places for RX & TX.

Maybe you need to be using an AppPassword to sign in

Most of my providers now need an AppPassword and they're not gmail either, i only found out my main provider switched to that system when i started getting errors.

Good choice. The Mail app has considerable limitations and can't be considered a full-featured email client.
