Addons that require container tabs

It's too late now but do give some thought to your thread titles when you create new threads. They cannot be changed later on.
The title is all people see initially.

So you've got only one chance to attract the interest of people who know about the topic you want help with.
If, say, you had given this thread the title Firefox Addons that require container tabs then you would have had a rapid response from Ghot, who spends over 106.7% of his time exploring Firefox. As it is, he might not have even noticed this thread.

In Firefox Quantum, if you are a developer creating a Containers extension, your extension enables Containers. So now, when the user installs your extension, they don’t have that additional step. If they try to disable Containers, they will need to first disable your extension.

This provides an assurance to extension developers that the Containers APIs will work when the extension is installed. In the past, users could disable Containers at any point and break all Container-dependent extensions. Now they must disable the extension itself first, in order to disable Container Tabs.

So if you want to use an extension that requires container tabs you must enable container tabs - even if you never actually use them and you don't need to use them if you don't want to.

If I have containers enabled, should I still be seeing this?



Why is the setting greyed out/inaccessible?

I guess that you must have installed this addon.

Container Tabs are enabled in Firefox by default. I cannot work out how to disable.

The settings button lets you add/ remove containers but the option to enable/ disable is greyed out for me also.

I'm guessing that maybe the only way to avoid the greyed out setting is to remove all extensions that are coded for container tabs (even if you don't use them the extension requires container tabs permission).

I found an explanation. The gist is that those are the only Firefox settings that tell you what you "cannot" do, but the way it is laid out, It's certainly not obvious. Sort of riddle we've been unknowingly forced to solve, which is initially what brought me here.

it's not about enabling containers, The murky message is about how you can disable them, if that's your goal. There are various addons, that, by their mere presence, will enable/activate containers. That image in my OP shows on of them.

Bottom line, if you want to disable containers, you must disable all addons that prompt the activation of them.

Before I posted, among other things, I was trying to understand the presence of "CanvasBlocker" there. I disabled it, just to see what would happen, after which, it was replaced in that settings area with my "Firefox Multi-Account Containers" addon. I disabled that, and it was replaced by my "Switch to previously active tabs" addon.

That pattern would have continued until I disabled all addons that "require/activate" containers. At which time, that greyed out option would have become active, and the user could then "uncheck' that box, thus disabling containers.

Maybe if they had foresight to list all of those addons there st once, it might have been more apparent, but if it was unclear, even to someone with your wealth of experience, it is poorly conceived, IMO.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't recall seeing anything in those tutorials that spelled that out.

EDIT: If I had waited a few minutes, we would have had your solution, and we could have avoided my bloviating on the subject.

Correct.

The thing is that it's probably easier to use those addons and leave container tabs enabled. You don't have to use them.

I did find a way to remove container tabs from the right click context menu but it involves editing css (userchrome.css) which you won't have unless you've customized Firefox.
