What are the errors if any that pop up in Thunderbird?

Lets rule out your Thunderbird install environment.

Press and hold the Shift key on the keyboard. At the same time launch Thunderbird. Chose JUST the option to use troubleshoot mode. Don't check any of the boxes.

Send an email or configure and send. Work at all?

Follow these instructions: AOL mail Account to Thunderbird Using IMAP

Try port 143 in place of 993 and port 587 in place of 465.

You said it works with SMTP but not with IMAP? That actually doesn't make any sense because you use IMAP with SMTP. Ar you referring to POP3?

People have suggested port 587.. and did you try Tbird's automatic account configuration?

Really you need someone with a working AOL account to comment..
