    Ad Blocker in Firefox109.0.1

I have run into a few sites, weather.com for one, that thin k I have an ad blocker installed.

    I don't. I used to.

I checked the addons page but don't see anything showing there.

Running Win 10, latest version. Firefox ver in subject line.

If possible, I would prefer to not have to do a FF reinstall from scratch.

    Thanks.

    Jerry

Do you use a Host file? Depending on what's in it, that can also cause some sites to think you have an ad blocker.

Hi Bree. Thanks. Just checked. Only entries there are for localhost. This is in the one in Windows\System32\drivers\etc.

There are a couple of others on the drive, but the one above has the latest date.

Yes, that's the one. If the IP address of an ad server being used by the website you are visiting is being redirected to Localhost then it will block ads from that server and appear as if you have an ad blocker.

Can you please take a screenshot of the message saying that you have an AdBlocker?
Thanks. I wanna see what it looks like.

(I just wanna point out that I noticed something kinda funny. The subject line of this post says version 109 for FireFox. I was thinking to myself, that's very close to Chrome's version, which is 110. Maybe the poster here was referring to Chrome. So I looked up what FireFox's latest version is; it's 109! My Google Chrome version is 110. haha. I find that coincidentally funny. But who knows. It's probably not a coincidence, and one company is just copying the other company version's "closeness". That implies that one company is being a "byter". You know, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, etc. Get it? It's a pretty lame joke. I use lame corny jokes when I'm trying to flirt with women that I like.
Lol hey Bree, remember a long time ago when I thought your screen name was short for Breeanne? And then you told me you're a man of Bree. (I don't remember what you told me what it means), but then I was like.. oh; You're a guy. And I did a little "step back")). haha good times.

The two entries in the hosts file are

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    ::1 localhost

Both are loopback, with ::1 being the loopback for IPV6

Couldn't see a way to paste screenshots into the msg, so I've attached a file for each screenshot.

First file is the initial message, which says it will give instructions for removing the adblocker.

Second file is the instructions for any of a few adblockers. Since I don't have a bl;ocker installed, they do me no good.

It's a paywall. Just came up on FF 110.0 too.
    Time to switch to Accuweather...

Hmh. I just tried that site. I have an extension in Google Chrome called AdGuard. I have it disabled for TenForums, but enabled for all the other sites out there. It worked on the Weather Channel; I get the same message as in your picture above.

This is what I would try:
    1) Go to your FireFox extensions page, and disable every single extension.
    2) Open a new tab and go to The Weather Channel's home page
    3) Enable any ONE of your extensions, and then refresh The Weather Channel page.
    4) If The Weather Channel page loads up without that message, then go back to your FireFox extensions tab, and enable any other random extension that you have (keep the previous extension enabled, [eventually you will be enabling all your extensions]), go back to The Weather Channel's page, and refresh the page. Keep doing this process until The Weather Channel tells you that you need to disable your AdBlocker.
With this method, you can find out what extension is interfering with The Weather Channel.

When you figure out which one is doing that, you don't mind putting the extension's name here? I can try to download it for Chrome, if they have a Chrome extension, and see what options I can set for it to allow The Weather Channel's page to work correctly.

    It's up to you.

    Good plan except....

    I have ZERO addons/extensions.
AND, I made an exception for weather.com in the FF privacy settings, and in the protections shield at the left end of the address bar. No joy. It's a plain old paywall.

It even wants me to bundle and save with Wall Street Journal which also has a paywall. LOL

    All my extensions...

But it doesn't bother me... https://www.accuweather.com ...works just fine.

About 2-3 years ago, weather.com started advertising for "premium" weather channel website.
Then they started removing little things here and there. That didn't seem to bother anyone, so now this.

Well, they can sit there and count their "nothing from me money". I can outlast them... no problem

Accuweather, has all the same stuff, without the money-grubbing.

A lot of the Accuweather site is better than Weather.com...
    Almost all of it...

And you can click on any day to get the details, etc.

How websites know you're using an Ad blocker is by testing if you block certain domains via their web code. There are ways around this so you can effectively flip these websites the bird and no one is the wiser.

I too discovered weather.com was very picky with uBlock turned on in my parent's computer. Disabling it just for that website cleared things up. But this is Firefox 108. I have yet to try version 110 and the above betas.

What I think is going on here is some kind of built-in Firefox privacy setting is tripping the website code thinking you're using an Ad blocker. So I would look in Firefox's privacy settings and experiment. If you want to do this independent of your current Firefox install, then use portable Firefox. It's stand alone and requires no installation and should not monkey with your main Firefox install.

Mozilla Firefox, Portable (browser) | PortableApps.com

    There's portable Chrome too.

Google Chrome Portable (web browser) | PortableApps.com

    Or try installing Ungoogled Chromium.

    Downloads for ungoogled-chromium

GitHub - ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium: Google Chromium, sans integration with Google

I personally like using the windy.com website. Lots of options and you can chose the weather models... Weatherunderground.com is another website owned by the weather channel.
