So what REALLY is my default browser?

I think it's Opera, Opera settings say so, and other applications such as my email client agree.
But links from Win 10 help open in Edge. However these same links work just fine if I paste them into Opera.

Is there a way to make Opera really really really my default browser without crippling the OS?

Yes, Windows ignores the default browser choice when opening its own Help links.
I've seen people ask about changing this before. These are the links I kept on the subject during 2022 but I have never tried to use MSEdgeRedirect.
MSEdgeRedirect also works in Win10 [dalchina #5] - TenForums
MSEdgeRedirect - Download latest stable release - GitHub
    MSEdgeRedirect - TWC

    All the best,
    Denis

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
    - [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

So I'll still be able explicitly to use edge, just the help links won't default to it?

Yes, that's the point of that utility.

I can't see anything in those links that says otherwise.

I've just realised that I gave you the GitHub download link and left out the main GitHub info page for it.

    Thanks for the rep,

Thank you. Installed tested works as advertised.

Edited to add: I had to reinstall Edge and turn off sync before it worked with no undesired side effects.

    @dalchina,

I thought you might be interested in Pete's findings after installing MSEdgeRedirect.
