    GMAIL 2FA Authentication Question

My phone number has always been associated with my GMAIL account. I routinely use 2FA to log in but I use GMAIL backup codes to complete 2FA. Recently I changed my password which went smoothly but when I enabled 2FA I was asked for my phone number which did not seem out of the ordinary. Now when I sign in I am told to complete 2FA I am being sent a code to my phone to enter. I did not get that message before and I want to stop getting text messages for 2FA. There is another screen "sign in another way" where I can enter the backup code but I want to put a halt to getting the text messages on my phone. Insight appreciated. TIA.

    Thanks for responding. Computer.

A cursory look at that link seems to show how to use backup codes and get new ones which I already know how to do. I'm looking to get the option back that I had before with 2FA where it asks me how I want to confirm after entering my password. Previously I had 4 options I believe. Text or call, back up code, GOOGLE authenticator app and one more I think.

Unless someone else replies I think I might just disable 2FA and start again and see if I can get it back to the way it was before.

    Sign in - Google Accounts

Remove text and call as the authentification method.

Thanks for replying. Apologies, but I was reluctant to use the link that you supplied. I do not want to remove text and call. I do not want text or call to be the default options which it is now after I reset my password. I want to add Use Backup Codes to the main options as well as the GOOGLE Authenticator option. And I do not see that now. Only this:

And when I click on 2 Step Verification it shows this:

Which is why I am still mulling over the option to remove my phone number and disable 2FA and start over. I'm hoping if I do that and do not enter my phone number first I will get the options back of using the Backup Codes and the Authenticator app and then add my phone number and hopefully this time the phone number will not be the default option. What do you think?

The order is decided by Google, you can not change that. Only phone superseeds call and text option.

SMS should not be used like ever, it makes the whole idea of 2FA pointless, it is insecure by design.
It is not better than nothing because SMS can be used to hijack your account, eg Facebook allows it.

See that Authenticator App option there? Try that With the Aegis App. A lot of 2FA base32 codes can be used with Aegis... If you use the Keepass password manager, install the KeePassOTP plug-in. It'll use the same Base32 code for the 2FA code. Nine times out of ten they're all 30 seconds long and SHA1 and TOTP (Time Based One Time Password).

    There are two caveats however:

    1) You MUST backup your databases manually to more than one backup medium.

    2) Your computer/device time needs to be exact.
