Password Question On Windows Default eMail Question, Please ? (W10)

    Hello,

I have two computers; a MAC and a W10 pc.
The W10 pc conked out after a power glitch, but have re-installed Windows on it, and it is working.

Can't get the Widows default MAIL App to work, or even a brand new install of Thunderbird.

Both are asking for a Password.
In my 80's now, and honestly don't remember what I used.
None of the ones I did mark down seem to work.

    The Mac eMail works.

    I use Comcast.

Question, please: The W10 mail apps are suggesting I re-do the Password, and select a new one.
**Am terrified, literally, that this may mess up the Mac's mail which is fine.

Would selecting a new Password in the W10 pc also require changing it on the Mac ?

Are they "totally" independent passwords, or they both would use/require the same one ?

If anyone could clarify this a bit for me, would be appreciative.

    Regards,
    Bob

    Bob,

I assume both your PC & your Mac are retrieving emails for the same Comcast email address.
Changing the password for that Comcast email address would require you to change the password you have saved in both your PC & your Mac [and would change the password you needed to log in to the email account online in your browser, assuming Comcast provide this facility].

I don't see any alternative to changing the password.
When you change it, write the new password down somewhere secure yet accessible.

This topic rings a bell. Haven't we been discussing this in another thread recently?

    Merry Christmas,

From OP For Denis: Followup Please

    Hi Denis,

    Thanks for reply; very appreciated.

Followup please: could these new Passwords for the Mac and the W10 pc
be the same, or would they (all) have to be different ?

I seem to miss many of the nuances these days.

    Thanks again,
    Happy Holidays,

    Bob

    Bob,

I think they are not two passwords but the same password used on two different computers to access the same Comcast email account.

Do you use just the single email address with Comcast? If so they are definitely two uses of the same password on the two computers.
Can you / could you access your mailbox online on Comcast's website? You would have used the same password there as well.
    One email account, one password.

    The Mac eMail works.

    I use Comcast.
As Try3 suggests.. and extending that.. if you have an email client on your MAC that accesses your email accounts successfully, then can you look up the password stored on that?

Note: so I don't have to look up or remember passwords too often, I use a password manager. These help you to log in to sites quickly and can fill login fields automatically.
These are 3rd party programs e.g. Lastpass, Keepass etc - I use Roboform.

"Would selecting a new Password in the W10 pc also require changing it on the Mac ?"

You can't, you have to use the Password of the Comcast Account.

The Password is for the Email server i.e. Comcast Email servers. Check by going to the Comcast website and signing into your Email Account.

Then go back to the W10 Mail App and enter the details, you may have to do this and tick various boxes many times before you get it right.

This maybe what you want, you will know better than me.

It has been said already. Try to retrieve your email password from your Mac and use it in your windows app.
