Getting too old, and Windows Mail

Going back to Windows 7, I found a way to get "Windows Mail" working on Win-7 like it did in Vista (by using the files from Vista, copied over to Win-7.

But, that rather simple trick does not work on Windows 10 (or 11).
Somewhere I read an article, on the web, telling how to actually do that in Win-10.

I did find a program on the web, called WMRestore that will do the trick, but, it's not FREE, except for a 15 day trial period.

However if I could find the FREE way to get "Windows Mail" to work on Windows 10 (and 11) I'd be forever grateful to whomsoever could point me in the right direction. I know the fix is out there someplace, but WWW is a very big place, and I just can't seem to find what I need.
I still don't understand why I didn't copy down the fix when I first read it. Old age, I guess.

Yes, it's Halloween, and I'm just a little bit Spooked. Looking for help!

    Cheers Mates,

You are probably looking for Windows Live Mail, which can still be found within the Windows Live Essentials package on a number of download sites. I am not going to link them here, as I have no idea if they are safe. But I can confirm that WLM dated 2012 works fine. A search engine is your friend (most of the time).

If you were using Outlook Express, you may want to take a look at the product Outlook Express Classic (OEClassic)

Time to go 3rd party.. I had enough after Outlook Express was killed off, followed by Windows Mail.

As much as I do appreciate all the responses, just let me say, I've got 40+ years of experience, in Internet Communications, going all the way back to a 300 baud telephone modem, on my Commodore 64, and Fido Net.

And I've tried just about EVERY email program that's come down the pike since then. Outlook Express was, and still is, my all time favorite. When I first installed Vista, I found that O.E. had been updated and renamed to "Windows Mail" (Winmail.exe)
That was OK. I quickly adapted to it and made it my new favorite.

Then in windows 7, the program was all there, but MS in their infinite wisdom disabled it so it wouldn't run. (Likewise in Windows 8.1)
That was easily fixed by deleting all the files in the Windows Mail folder and replacing them with like files from Vista.
That trick also worked a treat in Windows 8.1.

Oh, and along the way I've tried, Thunderbird, Eudora, Windows Live mail (seriously lacking) and O.E. Classic, which you or I have to buy if you want it to service more than two email accounts. (and if you want spell check to work).
Other than that, O.E.Classic is a great little program.
I do use the free version of O.E.Classic wherever necessary. It's as close to Outlook Express as I can get, shy of using "Windows Mail".
I really prefer Windows Mail, because it will service as many email accounts as I wish, and the spell checker works great too. And, it's free.

Now, somewhere I read an article where a gentleman told exactly how to get "Windows Mail" working on Windows 10 (and probably Win-11).

I just figured, that someone on here would know about that, and hopefully point me in the right direction.

If I were using Windows 10 as my Main OS, on my Main PC, I might consider buying the "WMRestore" program, (Which completely installs Windows Mail, on any PC running windows 7, 8.1, 10 or 11) but it ain't FREE!
    However, that's not the case.
I really don't want to BUY an email program, when I'm just experimenting. It's my hobby.

Windows 8.1 is my Main OS on my two Main PC's and I have "Windows Mail" working just great on both.

I'd like to get it working on my Test PC's running Windows 10 and Windows 11. Thus, the reason for this thread.

Thanks Guys, and have a great Halloween!

Yeah, Windows Mail had a very short run. It worked fine in Vista, then MS killed it in Win-7. Why Microsoft? Why?
They had a great program that was pretty easy to set up, and very user friendly, and they stuck a knife through its heart!
I don't know who made that decision, but they should be purp-walked out behind the MS HQ building and summarily SHOT!

If you only have one or two email accounts to service, O.E.Classic (FREE) works great, and even does the setup work for you. (at least if you're using GMail) And, if you choose to buy it, it's pretty cheap for the lifetime license.
I've installed it for several of my Customers who have only one or two email accounts.

    Cheers Mate,

Do post back and advise if it works.

However, be prepared for the Borg to use disruptors on any next upgrade of your vessel.
