Stop Microsoft Edge from running in the background after closing it

How do I stop Microsoft Edge from running in the background after I close it?
    I'm using Windows 10 21H2 and Edge 101.0.1210.53
I've already disabled the corresponding protocol settings for it.
And it's not running as a background app either. Microsoft Edge doesn't appear in "background apps" in the settings.

By default, Microsoft Edge pre-launches as a background process during Windows startup, when the system is idle, and each time Microsoft Edge is closed waiting to be launched by the user.
See Brink's How to Enable or Disable Microsoft Edge Pre-launching at Startup in Windows 10 tutorial.

    Hope this helps...

Not sure if this will help.
Since I use Bitdefender Internet Security, and don't use EDGE.
I just blocked EDGE and it's updater in the Bitdefender firewall.

THAT stopped it running in the background.
I doubt Windows Defender Firewall, will allow that, but since I don't use it... I wouldn't know.

There are some free firewalls, that might help, if you wanted to go that route...

    Tinywall, SimpleWall, Zonealarm, etc.

I had that problem when Edge Bar got included after an upgrade and you would see it in start menu.

How to remove "Edge Bar" from Start menu?

I've had that exact same problem. Try these instructions.

Download Process Explorer to your computer and once it's open, see if Microsoft Edge is doing some crash reporting.

If it is, then you'll see the word crashpad-handler in the command line prompt. This will be evident in the tooltip when you have your mouse cursor rollover the program name, or if you view the properties of the program then go to the image tab.

If the crash reporting is happening, then that's supposed to take long as it has to generate the crash dump, perform analysis of it then upload it to Microsoft. In some instances this can take 8 hours.
