I use IE & I use Firefox. I never get Edge adverts. I have not paid anybody anything.

It was not Office 2010 that was free. It was only the preinstalled 'Office 2010 Starter edition' that was free.

A lot of new laptops come with a free trial period of Office 365.

    All the best,

Almost all computers have factory pre-installed MS 365 paid for by manufacturer, the price of which is included in the cost of the unit. Some manufactures include MS 365 in the list of features along with a month subscription to third party anti-virus like Norton. Along with many other "crapware"/"bloatware", I routinely delete Norton before I proceed to use new laptop (together, they occupy too much space and utilize much memory/CPU resources). I was told that such pre-installed "bundled software" helps reduce the price of PC (or phone). It is a marketing ploy that is a source of easy extra revenue for manufacturers and a pain to new owners. Without them, PC will be sold for a few hundreds more.

Back to MS 365, some manufacturers to not bother to list pre-installed trial subscription to MS 365, in which case nobody else knows it is already in there. I just wonder if ignorant users would know after a month, when trial period is over.

The cost is zero. Anybody can have a one month trial.
Free Trial – Try Microsoft 365 for a month – Microsoft Store

Anybody on the trial will know when it is over because it stops working [fully or partially].

The cost is zero to buyers whether it is trial or full one -year subscription. One -year subscription is usually known to buyers because it is listed in the features (along with touch screen, fingerprint reader, etc). But trial subscription may not be so listed, in which case nobody else knows it is there., until trial is over.

Since Internet Explorer 11 is almost gone Edge has become the default browser for a number of things, programs that need the browser for updates, new features, etc. I have a diagnostic I've used for quite awhile and the latest update opened from within the program called up Edge and the security feature in Edge gave only one choice, close it. I ended up copying the URL in Edge then opened it in Firefox, success in the update. And Yes, Firefox is set as my default browser.

Using Windows + R and iexplore.exe opens Edge. It's quite similar with Write from way back [my 30-year-old Windows 3.1], brings up WordPad.

Actually no need for all this. Just install other browser of your choice and make it your default browser. But because EDGE is still there, MSN will remind you, each time you go online, that EDGE is a better browser. Reminder occupies a small space at the top of the page. Either ignore it or punch it out.

I really dislike that it eats up an obnoxious amount of space:
    Uninstall EDGE-159230_edge-ss-1-.png
Seems like program files in quadruple. So it would be good to get rid of it.

Didnt Microsoft get its butt kicked a few years back for anti-competitive practises by forcing IE on users, is this not the same thing?

    Well, I tried this.
Apparently it removed the older one of the edge versions, but not the other, also Edge webview (whatever that is). I manually erased the Edgeupdate folder. I still have 1+GBs of files though.
Running "setup --uninstall --force-uninstall --system-level" as instructed in the techradar and other articles doesn't seem to do anything with this. Nothing's printed not even an error message.
