Windows Live Mail 2012 won't display images - box with X

I know this is an old program but I'm trying to help a friend who is still uses Windows 7 Home. Everything was working fine until a few days ago when the emails she receives from businesses... ie. Costco... no longer showed the images. There was only a bo with a X for each image. Unfortunately the fixes I found when searching for a solution are for more recent versions of Windows Live Mail and the options aren't in the older version. One email I opened had an option to "show images"... can't remember the exact wording... should have written it down but that option didn't show in all the emails and I can't find it anywhere. Would appreciate some help. I'm trying to talk her into upgrading to Windows 10 which would eliminate a lot of problems.

Thanks for the response. I've never used Windows Live Mail... prefer Thunderbird... so I'm not sure what pane view is. The email opens up to full view if that's what you mean. I did see that option to show photos on another email, but the Costco one doesn't have that option. All the photos in the email and boxes with Xs in them. I went all thru the settings and options but couldn't find any way to unblock images. Even turned the anti-virus program off to see if that caused the problem. Nope. It is Windows Live Mail 2012 and I repaired that in Control Panel... nothing works.
