I have two laptops, Windows 8.1 and 10, both using Outlook in Office 365.
Is it possible to sync my contacts (address book) between them?
If not, is there a simple way to transfer/update changes made in one to the other?

I am doing something similar, but as I set it up a while ago, I may not be any help. I am sharing (and synching) contacts and calendar between my PC (W10, Outlook 2010) and my iPhone. I think its only possible this way as I have (and am using) an outlook.com email address on both devices (along with other non-outlook email addresses). If you are not using an outlook.com (or other microsoft) account, this may be no help. Having connected the outlook.com email account to Outlook 2010 on PC, I find it is using Exchange (without my specifying anything) - this may be the default, or only, option. When I look in contacts, I see both lists for the local PC, and the outlook.com account:
I moved all my contacts from the original _PC list to the .com one, then connected the iPhone up with the outlook.com email, and hey presto! it could see the contacts (and calendar). Presumably, if I were to connect another PC up to that email address (using Outlook) the same thing would happen.
If you are using different email addresses on the two laptops, you could add A's account to B, which would enable B to see A's contacts. You just avoid sending anything from B with the A account (I only read my outlook.com account on the PC, and, apart from accidents, don't send from it).
I'm sorry I can't be more help, perhaps in a wider context, as I was so surprised my setup worked I never recorded exactly what options I saw when I did it - for example, I have no idea now how to add another contact list to the 4 I have.

I am not using Outlook.com, I am using Outlook desktop client in Microsoft 365 on both laptops.
I am using (mainly) only one email address that I connect to from both machines.
But if I add a new contact to my address book on A it does not appear on B unless I remember to add it there as well.
The two address books are probably 90% identical but with a few missing on each, different ones en each that is.
It would be easier if A & B were at the same property but they are remote from each other.
If I used webmail like Outlook.com or Gmail it would not be a problem, of course, but I prefer a desktop client.
I have all my browser bookmarks synced and all my documents, etc synced to the cloud but there seems no facility for syncing email contacts despite the fact I am signed in to Microsoft while using Outlook.

I am using a desktop client (Outlook 2010), it is just the email address that is an outlook.com one. Since this operates through (in some way) Microsoft's Exchange servers, my two devices can see each other. If your email address is, say, a Gmail one, then I don't think contacts can be shared the same way, since it uses POP, SMTP or IMAP.
My normal-use email is Gmail, which operates on the same Outlook 2010 client unaffected. I believe you could create an outlook.com account, and hook both PCs into it as I have done. You wouldn't have to send any emails, just use it to sync contacts (and maybe calendar, as I do). Go on, give it a try!

mngerhold : My main email address is not Outlook.com or Gmail but it is a POP account, not sure if Exchange works with it.
I am confused when you say the email address is outlook.com but later say your normal email is Gmail.
So you have two webmail addresses but are using a desktop client to download messages - also a bit confusing I'm sorry.
I don't believe you can make contact sharing work with a POP account, at least not via Exchange.
Its quite straightforward: my main email address is gmail, which I access using Outlook 2010 on a PC. I also have an outlook.com email address, which I access with the same program - I also have a mail.com address as well, all three 'live' tgether in Outlook, but only the Gmail one is used routinely for emails, the others are backups.
What I am saying (again) is that you could create your own outlook.com email account, and use that (in a contact-sharing only role) on both PCs.
The synch works fine if you have the same Microsoft email account (outlook.com) on all devices. All my contacts on all PCs and Android phones are synchronised in all email clients using IMAP and the Windows 10 People app.

I do have an Outlook.com account/address but I don't use it.
I understand that if I put my contacts in there then they will be the same on both machines because it's web based.
But can you explain how I then use that online address book with Outlook desktop client.

Thanks Steve. I will look at the people app in 10 and the contacts app in 8.1 and try to understand how they work.
But I then have to get to grips with attempting to change my main email address from POP to IMAP which I have never used.
It frightens me that it might all go pear-shaped.
Under File>Acct settings>Email tab, select 'New' and add the info for the outlook.com acct. Assuming the account is recognised (the test that should automatically occur succeeds), you should then find that account under Contacts. Without going through the whole procedure anew, I cannot recall just what boxes you will have to fill in, nor buttons to click, before the test will take place.
Let me know if the acct appears under contacts, then we can take it from there.
