I'm not sure if it's enough resorting to those built in options in the settings or one of those third party extensions to clear history in Chrome. I personally learned the hard way a few years back Chrome stills retains your browsing history from eons ago (goes back several years) in some of these files with no extension.
This is in spite of disabling sync with my connected google account. I have since ditched Chrome and switched to FF. At least, FF gives you the choice of running a user profile from an encrypted location.Code:"Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Profile 1" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Bookmarks" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Chrome Bookmarks.txt" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Cookies" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Extension Cookies" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Favicons" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\History" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Login Data" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Media History" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Shortcuts" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Top Sites" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Visited Links" "Y:\HB\TMPF\CHROME\Web Data"
No matter which way suggested in this original thread I have tried to stop Chrome from saving history, after everything all someone has to do is click on the 3 dots on the right top and go to history and the last 10 or so site visited show?
No idea. Maybe try disabling all extensions if you have any and then test.
Enable or Disable Extensions in Google Chrome
Other than that try a reset:
Reset Google Chrome to Default in Windows
No Luck, turned off all extensions and did a reset, then ran CCleaner and clicked the 3 dots and clicked on history and the last 8 pages I visited are in the history. I wish some of you would test this. It's easy to start typing in the search bar and see that no sites you've visited show up as suggestions, none do on mine but if you go to history fromthe 3 dots the history is still there
Has anyone suggested that the OP try using Chrome in Incognito mode? In that mode, no history is saved.
I's say back up bookmarks (export to file).
Import or Export Google Chrome Bookmarks as HTML in Windows
Then completely remove Chrome to include leftovers. Then reboot and download and install a fresh copy. Like I said I only use a Chrome variant (Vivaldi browser or Chromium Edge) rather then Google Chrome so maybe someone could post details of how to clean install Chrome.
It will likely involve uninstalling Chrome them checking for and deleting leftovers after temporarily enabling "show hidden files;
Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives in Windows 10
Check here and delete the folders if found:
C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome
C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome
Thanks Callender for all your help I did everything you suggested, most of it before your post. I have decided to try Vivalldi and I am sure there is a learning curve so wish me luck. The first thing I noticed that even though it has no tracking and doesn't save history why is there a history link that shows all the recent pages I visited even more detailed than Chrome. Is there a setting to turn off history?
