Anyone get thunderbird to work with Gmail 2 factor Auththentication

Google forced turned on 2Factor Authentication today (Nov 9).

I cannot get Thunderbird (current version 91.3.0) to work with it.

Both Gmail and Thunderbird support has old info does not work.

Any assist would be most appreciated.

It's years since I messed with 2FA and gmail on non-compliant apps, have you tried an application password?

I have not done it with Gmail, but I use TB with an outlook account and there was an additional code that needed to be used somewhere (forget where). This this link might help.

You can go onto Google account settings and turn it off that's what I did and thunderbird works

Would not recommend turning 2FA off as it is good protection. There must be a way.

As others have mentioned you most likely require an app specific password.

Then don't use Thunderbird. It's not meant as a 2FA protection client. That's why GMail via web access works that way.

Once the account is setup in TBird (using the 2FA verification) it's of no further use - TBird is not interested in it.

Does any other email client use 2FA for GMail access (after the account has been setup) ... I don't know of any?

Thus far I can still access my gmail account using an email client. However I have been expecting this problem to occur since gmail published it.

Open Google Account, generate App Password. Copy it,
Open Thunderbird, Tools > Preferences > Privacy&Security > Saved Password.
Klick "Show Passwords" Look for your Google Account, Edit both Passwords (IMAP, SMTP) and paste the code you got from Google.

That's what I did with a few Outlook Accounts and it works perfectly. It should be the same procedure that works also for Google.

@syntoh You nailed it. That is similar to what I did for outlook. The only difference was when retrieving or sending email a message popped up asking for a password and that is where the generated password was entered (and saved).
