    Loss of emails.

    Can you please help?
I have a friend that is having trouble with Microsoft mail. It seems he receives mail, but after a period of time, all trace of the individual entry disappears. I believe this applies to both mail sent and mail received. There is a difficulty in that we can only communicate by phone, so I do not have any opportunity to look at his setup.
    The following information is known.......
He is using microsoft mail (not outlook) He is using windows 10 (do not know if 32 or 64 bit version OR if windows home or pro)
Do not know what AV he is using at the moment. I understand that some people have had this problem with certain AV's installed? He does not have MS office installed, so cannot graduate to the real deal email client.

He maintains that whilst using windows 7 - he never had this problem. When he was persuaded by someone to go to Windows 10 - he bought a new HP laptop, and from the very beginning he has had this problem. He currently has a blueyonder email address. Regret that I cannot give his present w10 version at this stage.
Any help / recommendations would be welcomed.
Thanks in advance for any responses
    C

Chances are the setting to hide emails older than a certain number of days is checked. I would change this to never.

Where is that setting in Windows 10 Mail?

Right click on the email address>Account Settings>Change Mailbox sync to Anytime.

Changing that to "Download email from the last 3 days" doesn't hide older messages.

Are you trying to show the mails which disappear or hide older mails?
Your reply is confusing. You need to choose all mail rather than x number of days to show old messages.

Neither. I was confused by your reply because choosing which messages should be downloaded does not show or hide messages.

Let’s go back to the beginning.
What exactly is happening? Are downloaded messages disappearing by themselves after a few days or only older mails are downloaded or only newer mails are downloaded?
Is he using the virginmedia.com server settings or blueyonder?

We seem to be heading into some confusion here.
This is not helped by a limited input by me, due to the fact that my only contact to the user is by phone - and he is not computer literate. Note that my own knowledge is also limited.
Firstly, he is losing mail in a random way.
Incoming mail can stay available for days or weeks - then suddenly it is lost. This also applies to mail sent - the same problem.

Response so far has reminded me that he (in the past had problems, and virgin arrived and re configured his setup). I can only assume that he is now connected via the virgin server (?)
I will try to convey the advice given by Bastet / NMI to the user and see if a simple check on settings clears the problem.
This will take several days - so be patient, and I will return and give an update.
I have setup 'mail' on my own computer to follow the advice given.
I have a outlook.com and gmail.com address as my normal setup, both of which perform with no issues whatsoever.
My thanks for your time and thoughts to you all.
    best regards

Most likely the Focused Inbox or Conversation setting in Windows 10 Mail App.

For just a simple straightforward Inbox switch both off otherwise you can apparently get "lost Emails" due them being moved/sorted/grouped.

Cog (settings) > Focused Inbox > Select an Account > Sort messages into Focused and Other > Off.

Cog (settings) > Message list > Organisation > Select Individual messages, not Grouped by conversation.
