How to configure Chrome similar to FireFox?

I have FireFox to use blank pages for "home page" on new windows and tabs. I have not seen how to do this. Google obviously wants Google as the home page. It allows specification of other home pages, but I don't see how to get it to display a blank page. Is there a way?

In FireFox I've disabled search from the address bar; a valid URL has to be provided or an error message is displayed (so all searches have to be done from a search engine's web page). Is there a way to do this in Chrome? I've seen this asked numerous times on the web but have not seen a definitive answer.

Blank page - set Home (opening) page to about:blank (works on any/all browsers)

Can't help with the 2nd part of your post, things G**gle are avoided on my computer(s).

I think I've done that, but it still launches the Google web page rather than displaying blank.

Understand that I know absolutely nothing about Chrome so anything I've done is based on web searches. The steps I took were:
    1. Clink the "Customized and control Google Chrome" at the upper right of the Chrome display.
    2. Click "Settings"
    3. Click on the hamburger in the upper left of the Settings display
    4. Click "Appearance"
    5. Enable "Show home button", select the lower radio button (I don't know hat it originally was labeled), and set ther value to "about:blank"

As I think about it, that achieved exactly what it said it would. If I click the Home button I get a blank page, but I want that without hitting the Home button. I want the browser to open with no home page. I'll select where I want to go from the bookmarks (if I get around to importing my bookmarks).

I should mention that this is a portable "installation" of Chrome. That may behave differently that a copy installed in Windows. And it's not really important that I get it working. I want it for the rare occasions that FireFox has trouble with a web site.
