Hi, I use Pop peeper (free/licensed with more features) (E.g. search for it using Google). This is a tiny email client, which can be set to periodically scan for an alert you of pending emails using an icon in the system tray.

You can set it to leave emails on the server, and you can use it to read and respond to those emails.

    Works for multiple accounts.

You can choose different tray icons- some indicate the number of emails pending, directly, or via a popup notification.

You can setup Windows 10 Mail App with just Gmail and get notifications of various kinds.

Currently I have a Notification and Preview in the Notification Centre, badge on the Task bar Icon, and on a Live tile preview. There is also a sound option which I don't use.

GMail has a built-in desktop notification system you might want to try. Once you turn it on, you just have to leave GMail open (minimized on your taskbar is OK) and the notifications will show and play a sound (if you wish) whenever there's a new email message in your Inbox.

This is the information from Change email notifications - Computer - Gmail Help:
Turn Gmail notifications on or off
You can get email notifications on Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari when you're signed in to Gmail and have it open in your browser.

    On your computer, open Gmail.
In the top right, click Settings and then See all settings.
Scroll down to the "Desktop notifications" section.
Select New mail notifications On (or Mail notifications Off).
At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.

Leave GMail open, but leaving just the icon on your taskbar is OK.

You can select a sound, or select No sound.

If you need any help setting this up, post back here, and I'll try to help.

Sorry. You'll have to use a third-party application (like dalchina's suggestion) or use Windows 10 Mail, if you want notifications when you don't have a browser (or GMail) running "in the background."

I use Windows 10 Mail, with just my GMail account in it, and it checks my incoming messages frequently and gives me a notification (I choose just Notification Centre, but you can choose Banner or Notification Centre or Sound, or any two or all three, if you wish, and then you don't need to have any browser running "in the background" at all. I find Windows 10 Mail easy, simple, and perfectly adequate even though it has very few "features."

If you need any more suggestions or information, please post here again.

    Thanks for the rep.

The one thing I've learnt about MS and email - after using Outlook Express for years- then Win Mail - then there was 'no mail' by MS.. is not to use MS for email! (Had to transfer 3 times).

Pop peeper really is so simple- handles IMAP or POP3. Can be configured to use an ANTI-SPAM program- or you can pay and have one built in. And it's maintained- occasionally updated.

If you wish to reinstall Windows Mail this tutorial from the Tutorial section can help:
Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10

Turn On or Off Notifications from Mail app in Windows 10
