This afternoon, an acquaintance brought me a Dell Dimension 8300 to check out and see if it worked. Her father was put in the VA December 2020 and the computer was put in a closet so no one would mess with it in case he got out of the VA. It has Windows 7, Firefox 81.0.2 with two add-ons. Out of curiosity, I changed the security setting from Remember History to Never Remember History and the add-on icons in the header disappeared but the add-ons were still in the add-on list. Switched back to Remember History and they reappeared and worked fine.
Tonight, I uninstalled FF using Revo Pro, deleted the two folders you suggested and ran Agent Ransack search which found no Firefox or Mozilla program entries. Installed FF, no changes to settings, no customizations, and installed the add-ons. Changed Remember History to Never Remember and the add-on icons are gone. Changed Never Remember History to Remember History and they reappeared and worked.
Both of these actions absolutely dictate that this is an FF issue.

Really appreciate everyone’s help. Don’t do enough of this anymore and ya’ll reminded me of several things I had overlooked in my diagnosis.

You're most welcome for the assistance, Ron.

I do plan to install Firefox on an old test PC and I could see if I can duplicate this behavior.

I have a few tasks to complete before though and don't expect to have the time for awhile.

I'll be sure to post anything I learn that might have value.

That's new one. I've not heard of such a thing. Do you care to mention the add ons? Maybe launch firefox with add ons disabled and try toggling "never remember history" again as a test to see if you get the same issue.

On another note: Before losing add ons type about:support into Firefox address bar and check which profile folder is in use. Open in and inspect the contents of profiles.ini and check which profile is in use.

After loosing add ons do the same and check to see if the contents of profiles.ini has changed or points to a different profile.

Add-ons are DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, Multi-Containers and New Tab Settings.
Disabling add-ons automatically removes the icons at the top so that is untestable.

Both the before and the after profiles.ini are identical

I can only suggest that it might be an issue with one of those add ons. Maybe remove them and test using some different add ons to see if the same issue occurs.

Callender, sorry about the delayed response, been dealing with back doctors all week. Did as you suggested this morning. Uninstalled one at a time and texted with no resolution. After they were all out I installed a few random add ons and tested after each again with the same results.

    Hi Ron

I installed FireFox ver 92.0 on my old test laptop with winver 1909. I installed 3 add-ons and toggled the setting for remember history. There was no change to the add-ons that appear to the right of the address bar.

I'll try the add-ons you listed in post #15 next and report.

    Update....

So, guess what Ron? I now see the same behavior with respect to 2 of the add-ons you're using.

With both DuckDuckGo & Multi-Account Containers, the add-on icons disappear When you choose to forget the History.
I tried them both, one at a time, and they both did same.

I did determine if you were to choose "Use custom settings for History", deselect "Remember browsing & download History" & select "Clear History when Firefox closes", the DuckDuckGo icon will remain.

Another alternative for the DuckDuckGo icon is to click the 3 dots to the right of the extension, select "Manage" and then click allow "Run in Private Windows". You can then select 'Forget History" and the icon will remain.

The "New Tab" icon always remained regardless of the History setting.

The "Multi-Account Containers" extension as per Mozzila, will not be permitted in Private mode for security reasons. Right or wrong, Mozilla has made that decision for Users.
