I avoid ALL google related software and ALL social media presence. Users are tracked, monitored, and "pursued" through these supposed "services" solely for monetary gain and political and ideological objectives.

Coupled with adblockers DDG, while not be perfect, is the better choice for denying access to "you".

    FYI:

    use:

    Code:
    https://start.duckduckgo.com/
    then configure settings.

    Code:
    https://start.duckduckgo.com/settings
However my preference in order is:

    Qwant

    Code:
    https://www.qwant.com/?theme=0&hc=0&s=0&vt=0&b=0&l=en&locale=en_GB
    Then DDG

    Then Google:

    Code:
    https://www.google.com/webhp

Okay, my opinion. DDG is more private than google but it still uses bing (mostly) to get it's search results. I sometimes use it but not often.

But, DDG doesn't pass user information on to bing...at least "presumably not"...given DDG's non-tracking claims.

    @galileo

Paranoia is just overdone these days

Just think of the sheer volume of data needed if serious scrutiny was done -- one would need petabytes or even more of data at any one time to scroll through. Current I.T systems aren't up to it unless you make yourself a person of interest. Just look how badly some big Govts handle I.T -- most tax depts usually make loads of errors and in some quite sophisticated countries there's often incredible difficulty and / or long waiting times just to get an appointment to even see a doctor - and as for getting treatment !!.

Who cares if you want to kiss your dog etc -- only if you've got serious things to hide should you be worried -- and these days often the most sophisticated criminals go back to incredibly "Low tech" methods for communication -- almost impossible to intercept by even the most sophisticated computer systems.

Who cares if google targets ads at you - just ignore.

What I want is better algorithm recognition on queries -- for example if I want to know more about Quantum Computing I shouldn't be targeted with a load of commercials by firms called Quantum Computing or Quantum computers especially if the search engine knows I've been doing a few queries on Quantum Physics. Of course one needs also to phrase the search query decently -- that's also an art in itself

What I do loathe though is some websites that automatically play sound when you access them -- I block those automatically.

Also if there were no monetary gain by companies -- what would people do for jobs, where would new innovations come from, how would people's pensions be paid for as they retire, how would medical advances / pharma advances be funded etc etc. One might question some of the practices of "The Free Market" but without it we'd still be living in caves, dying at about age 22 or earlier especially after any sort of disease and having to hunt for our food with wooden sticks.

    Cheers
