How do I restore backed up emails to new computer

    Hi

My old computer crashed last week and I think I saw it coming, one of the very last things that I did was to back up all the emails and contact addresses from Windows. I cannot find how to restore them on to the new computer, in fact there are very few buttons in the new outlook or whatever it is called.

    Thanks for your help

    Hi,
Assuming you are using outlook 2013, go for "file>open & export>import/export>import from another program or file" command from outlook menu and go to directory where you stored pst files.

Using the email that came with windows 10 there is no file button in fact there are virtually no buttons for anything apart from delete. If there is then I am not looking in the right place.

I would just add that I went this morning and got a windows 10 book from the library and in there is all about email accounts the only problem is that none of the pictures match what I am seeing on my screen.

What email program were you using before on your old computer? What was the file type given to the backup you made (the letters after the period, eg something.pst )?

The basic Windows 10 mail app will not let you import mails but Outlook (not free), Windows Live Mail (free) or various others will.

Depending what you were using before one or another may be more appropriate.

Our email account is actually with BT but I was using Outlook (quite an old version) and the emails automatically downloaded to our pc through this. I have found a free app which lets me view the backed up emails (can't print anything though). Having had a chat with the other half tonight we are thinking that we might just go direct to the BT email and then we won't have to worry about backing anything up or losing it if anything goes wrong, just got to figure out now how to deconnect from the windows 10 mail. Thanks for your advice.
