Apologies for my blind spot. Not quite - that option disappears when I write a reply like this.

Yes, it is hidden while you are writing posts and only reappears after you have posted them.

I was wrong. Edge did not launch immediately, but an hour or so later, it was back as though NONE of the deletions were effective.

    Try these :
    1) Open Registry Editor and go to key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
Right at the values look for values that includes "Edge" (without quotes). Double click at each of these values , delete its data , leave it blank and click OK to save.
    2) Open Task scheduler , look for any task that includes "Edge" and disable it.
    3) Make sure that the task manager also , has any relevant entries disabled.
    4) Go to folder C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete anything related to edge such a shortcut (if exist). Where yourusername is your user name folder.
    5) Re-check "Autoruns" to be sure no Enabled or not deleted entries with "Edge" exist. If exist , dont delete or disable entries yet. First check if the problem persists or solved with steps 1-4. If the problem persists delete-disable all entries from "Autoruns".
    6) If the problem persists , repeat steps 1-5 but this time delete-disable all entries from "Autoruns" of exist.
