    Chromium problems with Volume Mixer

    Build 21H1 19043.1052

I've noticed a problem that's only started happening recently. I usually set my installed Browsers to 50% of the Master Volume in the WIndows Volume Mixer. This has been fine for years but now both Browsers have begun resetting themselves back to 100%. This does not happen in Firefox. I've seen from another user that the same happens with Mic input as well as sound output.

Could someone confirm that they see the same behaviour?

Open Chrome or Edgium and play Youtube/Other Media.
Go to Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound/Adjust system volume
Adjust Browser to custom setting less than 100%.
    Close Volume mixer and Browser.
    Repeat first two steps.

Did the volume setting return to 100%?

With Firefox being unaffected i'm assuming this is a Chromium not Windows issues. That would be a shame as it would mean there's little that can be done here to fix it. It would be good to know if everyone is seeing the same behaviour though.

    Thanks.

Nope. Not even after a reboot!

Well, that is interesting! I wonder if re-installing my Sound Drivers might have some impact? Guess there's only one way to find out!

    Dunno!

It's consistent in Settings as well...

Reinstalled Audio Drivers but no change. Tried adjusting the settings using the modern Settings Panel but no change. Ran a DISM & SFC scan which have no errors.

Stumped! Might try to re-install Edge and see if that changes anything. Thanks for your input.

Edit: Reinstalling Edge didn't help. There's a Registry address where programs are supposed to store these settings. It's mentioned on this website:

AppAudioConfig - Edit app audio settings in Windows Registry

I ran this Utility and all my Browsers appeared along with Foobar2000, MPC-HC and a lot of old junk. Then i deleted all Keys under 'PropertyStore' and restarted all my Browsers and Audio related Programs again. This didn't resolve the issue, but when i ran that utility again the only Browser that was listed was Firefox which, like a trooper, continues to work as expected.

I think that might mean that Edge and Chrome no longer store the settings in that Registry Key as they used to. 'PropertyStore' had entries for them, but they weren't recreated when i deleted them. Firefox, Foobar and MPC all recreated entries there after i had deleted the original entries and ran the Programs again.

I can't answer this but perhaps you are using some sort of volume/ sound control addon?

No, but i did look at extensions. I couldn't find one that would seem to set the overall volume, rather than on a per tab basis. What is that you are running?

    This:
Audio Equalizer - Chrome Web Store

It doesn't seem to affect per app volume control in sound mixer.

I have noticed that Edge never shows up here unless it is actually running and playing sound:

Just a guess. Possibly I have disabled allow edge processes to run in the background when Edge is closed. Also disabled pre-launching.

Enable or Disable Microsoft Edge Pre-launching in Windows 10

For me any app volume setting for Edge does not stick after Edge is closed.

So it's the same for you too. Edge setting doesn't stick. Like you i'd noticed that Firefox is in the Mixer whether or not it is playing Audio, but Edge and Chrome are only showing when Audio is active. Not just Firefox, but Foobar and MPC. Unsurprisingly they all show up when i use the Utility linked in my earlier post. Edge and Chrome don't show up which means they haven't made an entry in the 'PropertyStore' Registry Key. I know they used to. So either there's a recent change or a recent breakage. Edwin wasn't having this issue though.

I did try the Setting in both Browsers to allow Background Processes, which i usually have disabled, but enabling them didn't change anything.

Might provide a clue on where to look in registry:
