    Firefox ESR?

As a non-enterprise user, should I install the regular version of Firefox or the ESR version? As far as I know, the ESR will still remain on the current build but the security updates will still be maintained in the ESR version.

I am afraid if Firefox gets a major update, then things might break. With the ESR, I can be sure that an update has been tested throughly before pushing them out.

Will the ESR version still be updated with security updates in a timely manner?

I’m more concerned with these major releases.

    Tor Browser 10.0.17: Firefox 78.11.0esr

We use it on a daily basis with Tor Browser and it is our default browser for years now. It was updated today to 78.11.0esr. Updates are not frequent and never break.

Stability is always there and we're using Raymond Hill extension only.

    Previous updates:
    v17:June 1 2021 /78.11.0esr
    v16:April 20 2021 /78.10.0esr
    v15:March 26 2021
    v14March 23 2021 /78.9.0esr

With the ESR version of Firefox, whenever there is a new update, will I need to download and install it manually or will Firefox automatically update?

For example, let’s say Firefox v78.12.0 (ESR) comes out, will Firefox automatically be updated with that version or does it need to be downloaded and installed manually?

    According to:

Firefox ESR release cycle | Firefox for Enterprise Help

Next version update should be offered.

Why not just install Firefox (custom install without maintenance service) and disable update checks. Extensions can still be updated and new builds can be installed by downloading the setup file.

    I'm on 89.0 currently.

There is no way it will auto update. At some point in the near future I'll install the next release over the top of the old one by downloading from here:

Let me just ask my questions in a more organized way below for Firefox ESR:

    1. Will new major releases be automatically updated by Firefox ESR or will it need to be manually downloaded and installed?

    2. As for security related updates, will I receive those automatically? If yes, what would be the time cycle for only the security related updates?

    3. And what is the Maintenance Service used for? What does that do?

    1. Need to download manually.
    2. Yes.
    3. Not sure if it exists in ESR. In regular Firefox it's an installed service that runs in the background that checks for and installs version updates. It can be removed.

What is the Mozilla Maintenance Service? | Mozilla Support

It can be disabled, uninstalled or even never installed. It's possible to skip install by using custom install option when running Firefox setup.

So if your aim is to manually update to a new version when you choose to do so then you don't need ESR to avoid update checks.

    FF esr

    1. Tor gets automatic updates by default, security and new versions. It will be the same for the ESR browser. See screenshot.

    2. No trace of maintenance service (custom install not available) during the install: Windows and Linux.

    3. In regular version it is never installed here. You have to check if custom install shows up.

Like I said above, updates are not frequent. The alpha release (10.5a6) was updated on June 5th (see log). Both regular (10.0.17) and alpha follows the ESR update pattern. Previous update was in April for 10.5a15.

This is a quite and stable environment.

Here are screenshots from ESR installer.

As stated - if the aim is to avoid automatic version upgrades - it is possible using the regular Firefox build. No need for ESR.

Thank you for pointing that out, but I still prefer to use the ESR version.

In the ESR version, will I still get security updates automatically as soon as Mozilla releases them?
