Hi, what would you expect to happen if you did remove them and then tried to download one?
(I have pdf set to open in FF)

The list on the left, top & bottom two icons, represents the file type association, so you wouldn't be looking at that dialogue to change that..

So there’s no way to remove them?

There is, but in doing so you will also loose the 'Open with' associations you have set up in File Explorer. Firefox is just showing you the file types you have set associations for. I set up a lot of associations, so my list is very long (as you can tell from its scroll bar). For example, I have previously set 'Open with' associations for .XML files to open in Notepad and Wordpad in addition to the default of IE, so that one now appears in Firefox's list.

It’s fairly easy to reset the list to its default settings.
With Firefox open, click the Open Application Menu (3 horizontal lines icon) at the end of the Address Bar.
Click Help > More Troubleshooting Information.
Scroll down to Profile Folder > Open Folder.
    Now close Firefox (important).
In the still opened Profile folder, scroll down to the handlers (.json) entry and right click > Rename to handlers.old.
Close the profile folder, then restart Firefox.
A new default list is set.
Click the image below to see a short video of how I have done this.

The list will eventually populate again over time.
To return to the content in that list before you set it back to default, use the same process to locate the Profile folder and delete the handlers entry, then rename the remaining handlers.old to handlers.
The list will repopulate as before.
