Microsoft Edge Randomly Restarts My Laptop

Every so often Edge restarts my laptop. I have never even seen a bsod or an error message of any kind. Very frustrating. I've tried with/without extensions and the result is the same. My Windows 10 version is 20H2 OS build 19042.985 and my Edge version is 90.0.818.62. I use McAfee Livesafe and NordVPN. If anyone has an idea of what to try (I can follow step-by-step instructions) or how to diagnose the problem I'd like to hear from you. Thanks!

Hi, may I ask what convinces you Edge is the cause?

Note the time when a restart occurs.
Have a look at your Event Viewer. Do you see Event id 1074?
How to Find the Shutdown Log in Windows 10

Please try using a different browser and see if you experience the same problem.

    History: (so often not given)
    - when did this start?
    - what happened or changed just before this started?

    Thanks

Restarts only happen while using Edge

Well for one it only happens once in a while and always when using Edge. I haven't checked the event viewer but I will the next time it happens.

This restart issue has been happening for a long time... at least since Edge Chromium was first released. If things go the way they have been it'll restart again by week's end.

Oh, and I have used Firefox and Google Chrome and there were no restart problems with either. I just prefer Edge even with the random restarts. But I will check the event viewer and note the time then next time it happens and get back to you.

Thanks. If it only happens when using Edge, then consider what it may be interacting with- e.g. a VPN, security software, any add-ons.

    I.e. eliminate, simplify.

My Laptop Just Restarted... Details to Follow

    Taken from Event Viewer:

    Level: Error
Date and Time: Wed. May 19, 2021 11:28:17 AM
    Source: EventLog
    Event ID: 6008
    Task Category: None

It restarted after I clicked the following link:

Ozzy Osbourne Pays Tribute to Randy Rhoads: ‘I Owe My Career to Him’

It appeared to load the page, then was a longer than usual pause, screen went black, then 2-3 more seconds and it restarted. After I was back to the desktop (and ran Event Viewer) I loaded Edge and restored this page. Worked fine.

I was wondering if it wasn't the specific page(s) causing the problem but rather something on the page that changes each time it's viewed such as ads. I tried uninstalling all of my extensions (I only have 4) but this same problem was happening.

I'm not sure what to try next... Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

6008 = unexpected shutdown. There are many possible causes.

If there was time for your system to log it, there may be something in your Reliability Monitor (click the red x corresponding to the time the crash occurred- if any).

You might try this (free, Win 10 too)
AppCrashView - View application crashes (.wer files) in Windows 7/Vista

    screen went black
    - one possibility is something to do with rendering the page- a graphics-related issue.

Using Edge Chromium, build 21H1, and starting from this page, I clicked your link- it was fine:
Microsoft Edge Randomly Restarts My Laptop-1.png
    Only extension- Roboform, password manager.

    Try using an Inprivate session:

In Microsoft Edge, Safe Mode is combined with InPrivate mode. To use Edge in Safe Mode, open a new InPrivate window.

To exit Safe Mode in Edge, close the InPrivate browser window.

    I tried Appcrash

First let me apologize for taking this long to reply. Since I last wrote I've had 2 more restarts including 1 just after 11am cst (about 30 minutes ago). Event Viewer gave me the same information that I posted previously, a 6008 code. There's no red x anywhere. I tried appcrash and there are no entries corresponding to my restarts. Next I'll try the inprivate mode.

P.S. That Ozzy Osbourne link that I was viewing when I restarted? When I went back to it it worked fine for me too. One time a restart, one time worked normally.

    - - - Updated - - -

I had just loaded Google Chrome and I was trying to click the menu at the upper right to update the browser and I got an identical restart to what Edge has been doing! (translate that to English :) Now what should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Event id 6008 = an unexpected or forced shutdown.

By way of a wild guess, it might be something to do with rendering the page - perhaps a graphics-related issue.

    See e.g.
windows 10 - How do I identify the root cause of unexpected reboots? - Super User
for a reasonable set of comments and some useful links.

Because the shutdown is sudden there is probably no relevant log (no time).

Could be hardware, could be software.

Trying to identify the cause requires elimination and substitution - which you can't realistically do with a laptop except in very limited ways.

Try first to separate hardware, software. Simplify.

    Ideas.
    1. Eliminate your installed O/S and internal disk. Create a live boot disk (Google live boot disk) e.g. Bob Omb's, Gandalf's, Kyhi's ... and boot your PC from it.

Run hardware diagnostics - stress tests, RAM tests, disk check...
If no failure, that could be promising, but not absolutely definitive. That's the difficulty with infrequent failures.

    2. Check your page file is set to System Managed. Example:
Fix Random Restarts, Freezing, Event Viewer Error ID 6008 Unexpected Shut Down, No Memory Dump File - YouTube

    3. Perform a clean boot (Google or see tutorial).
See if you see the same problem.

    Try using this:
Enable and Disable Driver Verifier in Windows 10

    4. Grab a spare disk, replace your system drive with that, clean install Win 10. See if you experience the same problem.

Have Not Had a Restart For Some Time!

I had 1 instance where it looked like a restart was coming and then... Edge recovered! I stay current on windows update so maybe Microsoft fixed the cause. If I go another couple of weeks I'll mark this issue as solved.

    Thanks for the help provided!!

    1 Browser Crash in Weeks

I was rolling along w/o any crashes and then recently using Edge out of the blue my screen went black and then... nothing. Eventually I powered down and when I restarted everything was okay. Event Viewer didn't show anything - not even a 6008!
