PSA: KB5003173 installation fails if Chromium Edge has been removed

I thought I'd mention this as I see others here have uninstalled Chromium Edge. The latest Windows 10 cumulative update KB5003173 will fail to install if you've previously removed Chromium Edge. You'll need to reinstall Edge from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge (scroll down to the Using Windows Server? link on that page to download the installer).

I guess unfortunately uninstalling Edge isn't really viable if it's going to break updates like this, but you can possibly still use the group policy files from here to prevent background updates, and EdgeDeflector still works with Chromium Edge to force Edge-specific links to open in your default browser.

Thanks- could you advise if there's a particular error message or distinctive kind of failure?

The update will get to around 97%, before you get the "Windows updates failed to install, rolling back changes" screen. Windows Update subsequently reports error code 0x800F0922, which I believe is just an "update failed" error.

Uninstalling Edge is not worth the issues you get later. If you don't like Edge just don't use it. I doubt it takes up so much space on the drive to need to be removed. I never understood why people uninstall "system" files/programs.

    ...bc we don't wan't it.

Be like me showing up to your house uninvited & oh btw i live here now but don't worry i won't take up much space. Also if you try and remove me, you can't...i'm integral to the homes operation.

    Anyway, installed edge...installed update...removed edge.

EdgeDeflector works most of the time, but I've noticed MS has replaced some apps in the store with PWAs which open with Edge anyway, i.e. Instagram, which used to be its own separate app without Chromium Edge installed. I'm not sure if that "feature" can be disabled without removing Edge.

I should also mention that Edge adds 3 services and 2 scheduled tasks which those of you keeping Edge but hoping to ignore it may want to disable.

Edge Chromium was not a system program. Microsoft made a dissusion to replace edge legacy to edge chromium.

The simple reason is i dont want to use edge. I am using ChromePortable and TorBrowser.

    Open cmd as admin...and run

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\{YourVersionNumber}\Installer\setup.exe" --uninstall --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall

Done...get your version number by checking that location in file explorer, can't remember what mine was i already deleted it.
