    Google Chrome Freezing

When I am navigating google maps If I walk away and come back sometimes Chrome is froze. I have to close chrome and reopen. Also YouTube videos if I pause the video and come back after screen goes off I have my monitor go off after 3 minutes. But it does not matter how long the monitor is set to go off I still have this issue. I really need to get this resolved. Someone on another forum suggested I download the Enterprise version of Chrome. I did that after a clean install of Windows. I am also using Microsoft Edge for the time being until this get's solved. But I really like chrome better, with this the other forum refuses to help now the person who was helping me replied "I'm done" just because I insist on using Chrome. Please help.

Why is this post being ignored? I have tested another computer an HPE 8300 both are running the latest Windows 10 and both have the latest Google Chrome.

Good question ! I wondered the same yesterday. Didn't reply because I did not have time and was on mobile.

    Random thoughts.

    - Check Event Viewer and Windows Reliability Monitor for possible error codes.

    - Disable Chrome Extensions to see if one may be the culprit.

    - Consider Reset or Reinstall of Chrome. Does Chrome have all updates ?

    - Link below is for Chrome Help Forum. May want to try there.

All the above has been done google chrome was uninstalled with Revo and reinstalled several times. Windows I have done a clean install of Windows Several times. Since I posted this morning I have found out it only happens on my XPS 8930 Desktop. Right now I am using an older HP Elite 8300 and it does not freeze. People on the Dell forum refuse to help.
Yes Chrome is up to date and there are no extensions.

    Hi i386,

Can you provide any history on this issue like when did this start?
Did it start suddenly after any specific updates or component installations?
Do you use any third party antivirus program?

Approximately how often does this occur, once per week/day/hour?

From reading the last post in this thread, do I understand correctly that this fault is limited to your 'System One' XPS-8930?

I would start with a Clean Boot.

Keep in mind that all non-Microsoft apps should be disabled, this is a temporary test state and they can be enabled later or anytime. Also, most third party antivirus apps must be completely uninstalled using the manufacturers uninstall program. Most of them still influence Windows while disabled.

    @W10 Tweaker

I have found out that it's not just on the XPS 8930. It also happens on my HP Elite 8300. And I have done a clean install already on both systems.

I actually noticed issues a few weeks ago I got sick and tired of ads on YouTube. So I added ad block extension. I started having issue then and was having script error message. But I have found out that is un related because because chrome will still freeze.

If I keep google maps open and walk away my monitor goes off after 3 minutes. When I come back chrome will be frozen. I will have to close and restart chrome.

Also when watching a YouTube video if I walk away and come back the video viewer part will be black. I have to close chrome and open again.

I just don't know what to do now that I realized it's on both computers. I am done with reinstalling Windows for now it's getting old I've done it several times. Right now on the XPS 8930 I haven't reinstalled Chrome yet. I am using edge until I or someone helps figure this out.

I just realized what you said about clean boot, I will try that tomorrow. Thanks

    OK, just so I understand.

    1) The fault is the same on both PCs. They both have Chrome lock up after the video returns from a screen saver (or the display times out)?

    2) The fault appears to have started about 3 weeks ago, about the same time as the installation of a YouTube adblock extension?

    3) Do you use any third party antivirus?

    4) How frequently does this fault appear?

    5) Do the Chrome lock ups only happen after the video returns from a screen saver or a display time out for both Google Maps & YouTube?

    6) Do you experience this Chrome lock up when the video returns from screen saver or timeout while looking at other sites?

    7) Sorry if I missed this info but are the bios and all other drivers up to date on both PCs?

    8) Were the bios or any drivers updated anytime close to 3 weeks ago?

    9) When was the 20H2 OS first installed?

    10) What OS version was used before 20H2 and were there any problems using that version?

Please keep me posted on the Clean Boot test results.

Also, please retain the numeric associations above for these questions, that will assist us both with keeping track of the details.

    Thanks.

After the monitor goes off after 3 minutes or it does not matter how long. Just after the monitor goes off.
    2) The fault appears to have started about 3 weeks ago, about the same time as the installation of a YouTube adblock extension?Yes only on the XPS 8930 but Windows 10 20h2 has been reinstalled using ISO from Microsoft.
    3) Do you use any third party antivirus?
    No just Windows Defender.
    4) How frequently does this fault appear?Every time monitor goes off.
    5) Do the Chrome lock ups only happen after the video returns from a screen saver or a display time out for both Google Maps & YouTube?
    Yes.
    6) Do you experience this Chrome lock up when the video returns from screen saver or timeout while looking at other sites?
    Yes.

Yes both are up to date.
    8) Were the bios or any drivers updated anytime close to 3 weeks ago?
Drivers were installed on the XPS 8930 this week using Snappy Driver tool. But it does not matter it still happens if I use drivers from Dell.
    9) When was the 20H2 OS first installed?
On the HP I was using Windows 7 still with edge browser and all updates. There is no malware from using Windows 7 I have been using Windows 7 since end of supportI decided to Upgrade to Windows 10 on the HP and use it while the XPS was acting up. But found out it happens on both PC's. I will double check again and see if it happens on both.
    10) What OS version was used before 20H2 and were there any problems using that version?
On the HP I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro. Windows 7 Pro was installed with HP Recovery DVD's.

Just a quick update I am on the HP right now and I just tried watching a video pausing it and waiting about 5 minutes monitor timed out after 3 minutes.
Chrome on the HP did not freeze. I am very puzzled about this maybe Chrome updated overnight? It shows
Google Chrome is up to date Version 90.0.4430.93 (Official Build) (64-bit)
I cannot remember what it was before I haven't done the clean boot yet.

This is what I mean by screen goes black and having to close and reopen chrome. Maybe the file uploaded, And on Google Maps it freezes and I cannot navigate. I am updating google chrome right now on the XPS I just reinstalled it after doing a Windows reinstall Yesterday. I am sorry for the confusion right now the XPS Chrome I have the Enterprise
exe file as suggested by someone on another forum. That version is 89.0.4389 I got to get it updated and see if I am having the issue. It was running the same version as the HP before I reinstalled. But I am done reinstalling, As far as having the full exe saved I like saving things that way better I just have to make sure to update. Again I am sorry for confusion it's just that my head is spinning trying to work this out.

Thanks for answering all those questions.

I believe we should develop an arrangement that we're both agreeable to in order to keep this process moving towards a solution. Please try to remain patient and calm, we will get this sorted out.

To simplify, let's refer to the XPS as the Dell PC & the HP as HP PC.

In your last update, you identified the HP PC as working and not showing this Chrome lockup condition, is that correct and up to date?

If yes, I would strongly urge you to park that PC somewhere and focus your energy on the Dell. Flipping back & forth between two devices is very challenging for you and I both.

Also, I could be wrong but I'm starting to feel as though we're chasing a moving target. For us to troubleshoot efficiently, we need to cease & desist any and all updates/configuration changes/OS installs etc unless we're both in agreement on the timing. Every tiny little change almost sets us back to the beginning and given we have no neural link, we're not working as a team.

Troubleshooting over the internet is definitely a team sport.

One of the most important practices I learned to use while working in Electronics & Telecommunications is to break down complex faults into simpler and smaller bite sized pieces. Trying to analyze a multi-faceted and complex system fault is beyond the capacity of most normal human beings, why would you choose to create that stress for yourself?

The Clean Boot may give us the answers we require, keep that test on top of your activity to-do list, until further notice.
So far, with the information we have, I'm suspecting a display driver or errant app.

I'm not certain about some of your answers, I'll add *details where applicable. I'm going to leave all of the questions together to help us and/or future readers. Please do the same. TIA.

After the monitor goes off after 3 minutes or it does not matter how long. Just after the monitor goes off.

*You have referenced this 3 minute period, do you have a screensaver or video display timeout configured for 3 minutes? I trust that the monitor going off is expected and the result of configuration settings, correct?

*You had indicated the Chrome fault started about 3 weeks ago, I'm trusting the above answer is suggesting the fault was happening 3 weeks with the Dell drivers and continues after updating the drivers using the update tool this week, correct?

    @W10 Tweaker

Thanks for the help I have done the clean boot on the Dell. I have tried edge to see if there is an issue. I tried the HP earlier with Chrome. But tried Chrome again on the HP and it freezes. This sounds crazy and it's driving me crazy. Maybe I should just use edge. It really depends on how long I let it sit. Sometimes its froze and takes a few seconds to unfreeze. But if I let it sit longer than 5 or ten minutes it seems to be worse. I know I said the HP chrome did not freeze but the last time I tried left it about an hour and chrome froze I had to close and reopen. I have worked with Computers for years and this has me stumped that is why I turned to help forum. I just don't know what else to do other than just use Chrome.
